I want to take a mobile radio, solder extension wires so I can mount the faceplate & mic in the vehicle dash and hide the guts of the radio in the trunk. Sort of intermediate between standard CB and Cobra 75. Should I avoid radios with digital readouts? or am I just nuts/glutton for punishment? |

Sometimes the whole radio can be mounted in the dash, I'm not saying your idea will not work, but it sounds like you may be asking for problems with the microphone circuit. Might be worth a try, plus you would have a one of a kind. I'll almost bet someone had tried this over the years. I know there are amateur transceivers that do this as well as maybe 1 or 2 CB radios. Although I've only heard about a remote head CB, but never seen one. |

Bluecanary25 Welcome to the Copper Forum! Yes it can be done but a lot of work. Someone posted in the last 2 or 3 weeks here in the forum about doing it and had maybe 80 jumper wires running from radio to dash. I think it was a 2950 radio. Good Luck and keep us posted. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Or, make a new front panel with an LCD, etc and micro-controller that talks over a much smaller bundle of wires to another micro-controller that actually interfaces to the radio. If Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, etc can do it so can we! Have contemplated doing this for a lark on my 959. Shouldn't be too hard. Of course I haven't started this yet, so have yet to discover all the problems, but have investigated enough to know it's well within possibility. |

I am thinking about doing this to a 257. I think it would only need a 25 ribon cable and some ferrils in it. This is one of my "free time" projects.= it will never get done. 73's |

Ibacbfreq, If you're going to need a 25 pin ribbon cable, why not use something like a 25 pin serial cable? that way you can have a connector on the back of the head that is removable just by removing the 2 screws and unplugging? And of course, a similar receiving plug on the radio end? What you would end up with is an attaching cable similar to that of the Magnum 357DX that connects the head unit to the amp which can be put in your trunk! Just a thought!
