No. Yes. Why? Until it's all said and done you have a radio that cost more than an export, and is heavily modified which makes it more likely to fail and more difficult to repair. That's why exports and 10 Meter radios are so popular.

if you can find an expo 'L' kit, 40 up & 40 down is MORE then sufficient. even the basic switch/pll mod gets you up to 28 mHz & as low as 26.815. unless you're a trucker & want 26.735(ch 19 down 1 band)i find that mod fits my needs perfectly.
as for dependability, if your soldering abilities are good, all the well known mods for that radio work GREAT!

Is 26.735 used a lot by drivers? also i found a way to mod the mb8719 to get 27.415 to 27.445 mhz and i was just wanting to build something different but ye a 10 meter radio would be more cost efficent

you could do them together-the switch mod will get you about 20 more or so high channels-too close to 10 meter ham band to bother with. the expo kit will get you MORE lower channels below 1, including 26.735. on an export radio, on ch 19, 1 band down is 735, truckers go there occasionally. the 3 switch mod will get 415-455. the 2 switch mod leaves out either those channels, or the low AM's-usually.
the 148/XL radios out talk & out hear MOST exports, starting around $250 with the omega force would be where to go to get a radio 'better' then your 148. maybe. to mod your 148, a couple dabs of solder & maybe a diode or resistor or 2. how is it more cost efficient to buy a new radio? if you NEEDED echo, talkback & roger beep, they could all be purchased for less then $50 & installed(by you) with a couple more dabs of solder. & you still have a radio better then the majority of exports.
other then a magnum, i'd stick with the cobra & mod it.

You can move the 148 to 10 meters easily enough, but it won't handle both 10 and 11 meters without some extensive modifications. Probably your best bet would be a Super Expo kit if they're still available.

What is a SUPER EXPO kit what makes it different from a regular expo kit?

It's a Lou Franklin kit - I'm not sure if it's still made. Instead of simply switching the crystal in the radio's oscillator, it has it's own oscillator and mixes it's output with the radio's VCO output and the product goes to the transmitter/receiver mixing stage. It basically bypasses the VCO so you don't have to worry about broadbanding it for wide frequency expansions. I don't know if it'll work for your purposes, but it's a better bet than crystal switching.
