I have been thinking of getting one of these because i like to have type accepted equipment.
I mostly use SSB so I was wonder after doing this mod what kind of wattage I could expect with out over driving the finals i was thinking
about 25 to 30 watts PEP on ssb and about 8 to 10 watts carrier with some what good swang on am
so if anyone has done this please let me know i am more concerned with the ssb performance the only thing i use AM for is CH13 and 19 when im mobile but ch13 lsb mostly or ch38 lsb please help me out if you know what to do.

i am in the process of re-doing a botched mrf477 mod to a grant xl. even if i get it working correctly, it would hardly have been worth the effort.
do as chad states-

-or-

mount a stinger board inside radio, or you MAY be able to customize another small amp to mount inside-am trying to modify a texas star modulator V to fit inside cobra 148. or just get a SMALL amp such as kl40 or 60 & velcro to radio case, less then 12" coax & power cables could be run together-& you could even run rg58 or 8x from INSIDE radio to INSIDE amp thru holes & only have 1 pl259 to deal with-output at amp.

I mess with a stinger board in a cobra 29 for over a month and never could get the sorry thing to work!I would go with a small amp.Ever gave any thought about a 95T or one of the rangers with a built in amp?

I heard that the cheap version throws a lot of RF in your radio Heavyweight

I have installed several stinger boards, never a problem. I always installed the rf shield which is included.

No, you just think you'd like to know more. They aren't good for anything except building up heat in your radio, in my personal opinion. I've posted about putting the dual final's in a 959, and although it was fun to do, the only thing it really picked up was the audio. The power seemed to stay about the same, it did increase, but not like a factory dual final radio. Although I believe if I had worked a little more with it, I could have seen the figures I was hunting, I just lost interest.

I personally don't like the stinger boards, but that's my opinion. Technically whether you add a internal or external amp, you'll still be illegal, so what does it matter if it's type accepted or not?

Well if you want good performance on side band then dont clip the mod limiter.Case in point. My 95T was clipped and it would not talk on side band clearly. My Uniden grant was not with just a basic p/t and i can talk all over the world with it,with maybe 18 pep watts output. Now that i have fixed the 95 it really talks on ssb.The point im trying to make is get a radio that has all the power you will every need like a 95T,2970 and you will not need to have a stinger board, externel amp.Its a lot of money for one of those radios but if you think about it.Once you buy this or mod that for what you have now in the end you could have got one(Galaxy Ranger)for the money you just wasted.
