I am handy with a soldering iron so if anyone has some power mods for this radio that would be greatly appreciated. I know alot of mods for the Cobra 148 GTL including volting the final but this radio seems to be quite a bit different inside. |

Volting the final only changes the voltage to the final from 12.8-12.9 to 14 volts. I was told that a Grant XL has the same PLL, audio circuits but the board looks way different. |

sparkomatic, what PLL is in your grant? the stock voltage on the final is 8 volts. volting the final puts 13.8 volts to it. if done right this will increase your peak audio output. if, however you set the deadkey too high, (above about 5 watts), you will really be stressing that final transistor. if your grant has the MB8719 or MB8734 chip in it, then it is the same radio as the 148 or the 2000. |

2000/148/xl/lt/TR296/general sherman/radio shack & a couple others....EXACTLY the same board with a few MINOR changes, none of which alter the standard mod procedures...on the other hand the president grant (US legal) & later uniden version(prior to XL/LT versions) WAS different...the general grant is a 150 watt connex 4800dxl... |

Kid_vicious you are correct the voltage to the final is usaully 6 to 8 volts on this type of radio this is to keep the wattage down to 4 watts on AM,When you go to side band the voltage goes up to 12 to 13 volts. I did this to one of my 148`s and had the AM carrier to 8 watts and adjusted the modulation where it would not do over 16 watts max.I set the ssb power for 14 watts. But you are correct.
