This is probably one of the stupidist questions ask here in a long time. But I have just got a RCI-2995DX, the base version of the 2970DX mobile. I was wondering first if the 2970 could be converted to work on 6 meters. I know that if this can even be done, it will be a job for sure. But, because I have some (very little) spare time on my hands, I'd like to try it if possible.

porkchop Almost any radio can be converted but it becomes a matter of how much work ..... You also have to remember unlike the " GOOD OLD DAYS " you dont have thoes miller coils sitting there ready to be rewound....... |

Well, the "GOOD OLD DAYS" must have been before my time, cause I don't know what a Miller coil is. I figured it would be a lot of work, but I was curious if it could first be done, and second how much work were we actually talking about and last which parts and where to get them? I'll keep looking and waiting to see if anyone produces the information needed.

Hmmm. Let me see here. Most likely the cheapest thing to do would be get rid of the radio and purchase a new 6 meter unit. I assume that all crystals and probably most tuning slugs would have to be changed. Also some type of PLL conversion or even changing it also. I need to find a 5054 and then salvage the amp from the 2970 if I want a DX version. Does anyone know if the finals in the 2970 would work for 6 meters? What about the amp, the 2290's that are in it now? If not, then I would have to purchase new finals for the conversion as well. Probably better off looking on ebay and finding a 5054 and parting with my dearly loved 2970. |

Well, there have been disagreements here about CB or HAM being a hobby. I personally feel like it's a hobby, both of them. So for the sake of spending time doing my hobby and having "me" time, I thought maybe this would be a fun project. After second thought, I think the best thing would be to part with the 2970 and hunt a 5054 or other 6 meter radio. The thought of keeping the 2970 and using the amp on a 5054 has crossed my mind as well. But who'd want a 2970 that someone had ripped the amp from? Nobody, unless they wanted to use it for a base radio or something like that and feed it into a bigger amp than what was originally on it... |

Therealporkchop, You are 100% CORRECT! Weather you are a CBer or a Ham or a CBer and a Ham if you talk on the 11-meter CB Band or any of the Ham Bands you are nothing more than a Radio Enthusiast and it is a HOBBY no matter what Band/Mode or Frequency you choose to use. Good choice on looking for a 6 Meter Radio and keeping the 2970 stock. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Well, I appreciate it Lon. I still think it would be time consuming yet fun, to attempt such and succeed at it. But anyway, maybe that's the cheap side of me coming out, I don't know. I might post the 2970 on an internet auction site, I saw a 5054 on one of them today. |

Well, I am lazy and haven't wanted to go outside to the shack to try to talk to anyone. Plus it's a little hot out there and because I rent, I put my A/C in the shack.
