the Mod that is out for the Cobra 200GTL DX is only part of the Mod doing the mod by only pulling the R138 gives you the 11 meter band But it dont Xmit on 10 Freqs per band you would need to add the following step to finish it to work and Xmit on all the 11 meter Freqs

right above where R138 was removed you will see an empty pad set solder bridge those pads and you have continuous coverage

Does anyone have the diagram of the Cobra 200 GTL DX showing the parts layout. None of the parts on the board are labelled so difficult to identify.

Has anyone have a picture of what it needs to be done to have continuous coverage on 11 meters on that Cobra 200GTL DX?
I'm confussed when trying to find that empty pad set.

The audio is still very 'tinny' and doesn't sound good. Anybody got any othe rmods to help this radio gain some self respect in the audio department.
People can still hear it and know what you are saying but it lacks depth and body.

I heard one a couple of weeks ago, he had done the two mods(channels and cap) and it sounds real good, thinking now about getting one myself. He said it peaked about 150 but I think thats kind of high, but the sound was real good. He was about 15 to 20 miles out using it as a base.

NOTE!

There are 2 Different conversions for the Cobra 200 GTL DX Radios.

The Conversion for the 1st batch of the Cobra 200 GTL DX Radios have a SMT mounted in place where it says R619.

In the Picture for the 2nd batch of Cobra 200 GTL DX Radios as in the picture there is NO SMT mounted on the board at R619.

And be VERY CAREFUL when soldering or removing SMTs and installing the jumper across the pads of R619.

has anyone tried to open up the channels further than the known channel mods?
to be more specific i was looking at the schematics and noticed the parts missing
r-633/d-3
i also noticed that no one has figured out how to get the 10k switch to work after the mod it is suppose to switch the channel selector from 10k per click to 5k per click hens fast/slow or fine/course channel changes per click.

i also noticed that before the mod the radio will read the channels above 40 as 41 42 43 respectivly and after the mod it will only read to 40 and then 0.1 0.2 0.3 respectivly.

my main question is if you add all of the missing components in the channel circut will it cover the freqs and still have the fine/course channels and the readout 41 42 43 ect. is it posible that the 10k switch becomes the on off switch for these functions after all of the missing parts are installed?

i would try this on my radio butt i would like to get some more input because i do not want to put the parts in and have it smoke the eprom.

?????????
any ideas??

Hello.
I see many items concerning the Cobra 200 GTL DX. The conversion is very tricky and I advise a high power technicians magnifying glass to be really percise.

Please don't attempt this if you are very nervous, shaky, tired, upset etc.. This conversion is not for the shade tree technician.

I do have some items I'd like anwers on about this radio, and if anyone knows more about the other good things we can do to this radio.

Radio Items - Fix or Suggest

1. Strong mod block or lack of full fwd. swing.
2. Low sounding ETSS.
3. Best mic for radio besides the stock mic.
4. Audio clipper location(s) or mod.
5. Low pwr out on cb 1 - 40

Thank you for any information you can supply. 73's

I also need the audio clipper mod, my 200gtl dx has somewhat low modulation and Ive adjusted the pots for maximum modulation but still sounds too low, I'm also soft spoken. Need to know what would be the loudest talking microphone for this radio, red road devil by astatic perhaps?

Dx....defeating the limiter in the cobra 200's seems to have other repercussions. i've seen/heard a few, & heard of others, that lost audio QUALITY after the limiter was removed. replacing it did not seem to resolve the problem, & the radios have needed 'professional' repairs. as for the road devil, i LOVE that mic! have them on radios all over the place! they have woken up my HF rigs, my 6 meter rigs, & sound great on MOST CBs/exports. my ic551d & rci5054dx100 got EXCELLENT audio & quality reports from HAMS, so it must be a fair mic. not to take anything away from the dm452 echo mic, for an $18 mic, i get great reports on my S9....see if you can find on auction an old jm+3 turner handheld mic, they can make a 'soft spoken' voice sound LOUD, too.

I have a Cobra 200 and on SSB. If I run it on high power and talk a few minutes, power goes
from 100watts to 0 watts. I know this is a PA protection circuit of some sort. Can someone tell me how to disable it? What good is a 100
watt radio if it will only do 100 for a few seconds. If I put it back down on low power
it will reset ans start back up at 30 watts.
The circuit never kicks off at 30 watts....
Thanks

is it 'over-peaked' & running hot? are the swr's too high? unless there is a bad diode/transistor/resistor somewhere in the circuit, a 'PA protection circuit of some sort' that is in 'protection' mode, must have detected a problem. or else it wouldn't be 'protecting'. or, a bad solder joint? or, back to 'over-tweaking', maybe the finals are on their way out?

This is just one of the cases where I wish it would go ahead and BLOW up. So I could fix it.
No it has NOT been peaked. This radio would easily do 170 watts tweaked. It works great on
AM FM, Low and High Power. SSB High Power is
the Problem. Just playing with it today I found
it makes a little popping noise RX when the
protection circuit resets. But it has to be on
the LOW Power setting for this to happen.

Why mod the radio? Leave it like it is. If you want 11 meter, buy a CB and not a amatuer radio.

Relay or relay circuit going bad? Regulator going out? Someone told me that you could change out the regulator for a larger one but don't know if that's true and if so what the part number would be to upgrade to.
