Just have a couple general questions about this amp, first of all when hooked up to a peaked and tuned 2950 how many watts should I swing (idealy) and two how many watts input can this thing handle, and three can it be modified for more wattage or not...thx in advance.... |

I would be a bit carefull of driving any 2 " PILL " amp with a 2950 The last 2950 I had would run over 20 watts out on SSB ...... ENOUGH to cook many amps. This was the reason I built a 4 output amp for 29.600 FM ..... it's class "C" and requires more power to drive than a SSB CLASS "AB OR B " amp but even that amp would go 300 watts with 7-10 drive. I would check and see how much power that amp needs for FULL output and drive it on SSB with 1/2 that ........ you'll wind up with a clean signal and not have the FINALS go POOF!

I appreciate the input Bruce, Not really sure how much the 2950 is putting out, I'm gonna check it as soon as I get access to a Meter, I really don't operate much on ssb, only a little once in awile to see if I can make some dx contacts but rarely to say the least, I bought the 250 HD cause I was told the High Drive would handle my radio... Was I mislead? sure hope not. |

Palomar calls these amps "high-drives" but they are not. The papers that came with my 450HD said 2-4 watts DK and no more than 25 watts swing. I wouldn't put more than 2 watts DK and around 15 watts pep into your amp, and that may be too much. Don't expect the full 250 watt swing. A 45 watt DK and around 180 watts pep would be more realistic Hope this helps. |

What Moonraker said...EXACTLY....at least on "med" power. "High" power not a whole lot more...maybe tickle 200w with a 60DK @ 2.5W input. |

I run a uniden grant converted, aligned, tweeked, peaked and tuned to the max. Swing is great and needle is in the red on swing. I run a palomar 250 and on high I get about 180 watts. I have ran this amp with a bunch of tweeked radios and amp gets warm, but not hot to touch. I have had this amp for 4 years now and still whams 180 watts. It's a good amp if you respect them and not overheat them. |

Yeah I don't talk for extended periods of time, so Mine has never gotten hot too the touch either, I ran a little test on it tonight talking with a guy down the road about 32 miles away from me, we talked quite awile and I kept a feel on how warm the amp was getting, really not that warm at all...thx.. |
