earthsea, if you have to ask that question, think long & hard before you do it. it's a lot more then just what size alternator. what type of car-in case there may be computer issues. what type of car in case there are size restrictions. you could add a 2nd alternator if room allows, keeping the factory 1 dedicated to run the car & the 2nd for the amp. a 225 wrangler or rebuilt leece-neville(not stock amps, but high power). or multiple alternators in parallel. or a motor maul. you may need multiple batteries, with the maul, you will. you'll need to upgrade lots of wiring. you'll need to run lots of wiring. you'll need an antenna that will handle the watts. you'll need coax that will handle the watts. you'll need a mount that will handle the watts. you'll need an inline wattmeter/swr meter to keep an eye on things. you'll need to make sure your swr's are 1.3:1 or less & stay that way. and that's just off the top of my head. sure, you could throw a dx250 driving a dx1600 in, a bunch of batteries, lower the drive, & swing 800 watts, but that fatboy draws a ton of amps, there are no shortcuts to take with it. it has to be done right. it's a lot of money to burn up if not done right. and it could include the car as well, if there are problems. |

Step 1 - Replace car with an older Suburban. Step 2 - Follow Pat's instructions. Step 3 - Wear a grounded foil suit. |

Proceed with caution....make sure the ducks are lined up properly........good luck.......Ol'Ben 200Amp+ alt(ground)/ at least 1/0 wire(+ & -)/ at least 1(2) good batteries(ground)/(ground)........this is all 'add-on'for the 8 pill, not auto upgrade...... Did I mention ground? Good news.....if you go for it?......you can get all the help you need on this forum! Ask........when in doubt, don't til you ask! Now........go forth and have some fun! |
