Hey guys, I have a Texas Ranger TR-966.. I did clarifier mod as described:
First Procedure........
1.Remove R113
2.Remove D68
3.Remove D38
4.Place a wire across D38 mounting holes
5.Place a wire from J14 (which is +8volts) and connect it to J9 at the F1 connection.

Second Procedure.......
After the covers and face are taken off, and the face lifted slightly
1. Remove JP195
2. Remove JP196
3. Place wire from J14(+8volts)and connect it to J9 at the F1 position

I did both different mods with the same results....Only a 3kc slide each way.........Am I doing something wrong or is there a similiar way to get a 5kc slide on this rig......Any input from you guys would be appreciated.......Thanks

never done a 966, but check for any other mods for galaxy 949/959/2547. 3 kc each way is probably 'normal', you may be able to remove(jumper) another resistor to increase slide, or add some inductance to increase range. you may also look up 'extended range open clarifier mods' for 148/xl, & compare schematics to 966/galaxy & see where differences are & maybe tweak what you have. if nobody else comes up with exact mod, i'll try to pull out ept0696 schematic & compare to xl.

Hey Patzerozero, I think I gotter by golly......I looked up clarifier mod for Galaxy 2547 and did the following:
Remove D68 a 1N4148 diode.
Remove R113 a 47 ohm resistor.
Remove R153 a 2.7K resistor.
Jumper D38 a 1N4148 diode with a jumper wire.
Jumper R114 a 2.2K resistor with a jumper wire.
Run a wire from 8 volts constant to J9 pin F1.

Kinda similiar to procedure in earlier post but for Removing R153 and Jumping R114....I have about a 6kc down and 4kc up......Thanks for info bud, Darn I love this forum..........73's

Ok Patzerozero, here's one for ya........I seen this mod for a RCI-2950 old version.......Is there a similiar mod for my Texas Ranger TR-966....

Very "Noisy" Receiver

To fix: Locate R78, a 2.2 K resistor and replace with a 6.8 K resistor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improved receive gain
Quieting of AM reception and improving gain of incoming signals is a common request from radio operators. In the first stages of the HF input 2SC1674 transistor can be found. This transistor is responsible for the amplification of a small detected signals. A problems exist if the transistor itself is noisy as is such the case of the 2SC1674 when compared to other low noise packages. Along with the amplification of the incoming signals is transistor noise. Replacement of this transistor with a higher gain, lower noise transistor greatly improves the signal to noise ratio of your receiver.
We will use an 2SC2999 transistor that has higher gain lower noise characteristic. Replace the 2SC1674 (Q18) with an 2SC2999 (or similar low noise and high gain transistor) to achieve this improved signal to noise ratio.
Re-Adjust L8 and L9
The gain will improved with more than 6dB with the same signal to noise ratio.

not sure what 'helpful' reduction of noise the 1st mod gives you. r78 is on the 1674 transistor q18 between tuning coils L8 & 9. i would think that along with noise, it may remove some signal strength as well.

the 2nd mod is a very popular mod with the uniden 8719 chipped chassis'. check your 966 for an rci8719 & you can give it a try-should be Q17. some receiver designs cause this mod to increase noise as well as signal, you have to try it & see how it does. should be good with the 966 though.

Does that mod pertain to AM as well as SSB?
Just curious.....thanks

the above continuation of the 2999 mod pertains to SSB

for AM & SSB, you need to do both transistors. the 2sc2999 is for AM & replaces a 2sc1674-in the 1st rcvr stage. then, for SSB, you take the 2sc1674 that was previously removed & put it in place of the 2sc945-in the SSB detector stage.

Not to split hairs, but TR14 2SC1674 is the RF amp and it works in all modes, not just AM.

i knew that....just follow the schematic from the antenna jack & it is the 1st thing you come to the SSB detector mod is for...SSB.

HI, I READ THIS CLARITFIER MOD AND ALSO THE NOISY RECIEVE PROBLEM ON AM & SSB. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. ONLY THING IS, I HAVE A RANGER TR-969F MOBILE! CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW I CAN GET MORE "SLIDE" ON MY CLAIRIFER & ALSO HOW TO PUT A 10kz SWITCHIN MY RADIO. AND HOW TO IMPROVE MY RECEIVE ON AM & SSB?? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED..
THANKS.

ALSO FORGOT TO SAY. I DID THE 2ND PROCEDURE, ON MY CLARIFER. NOT THE 1ST PROCEDURE, WHICH WAS: 1.Remove R113
2.Remove D68
3.Remove D38
4.Place a wire across D38 mounting holes.
WILL THIS PROCEDURE WORK ON MY TR-969F MOBILE?
THANKS.
