My Experience with the new Cobra 29 LTD Classic
I've previously owned a Connex 3300 (upgraded final), a RCI 2950 DX, a Galaxy 959 DX and many others along the way, but I must admit --- I am in love with my new Cobra 29 LTD Classic! (purchased from Copper on 8/1/2006)
The board does not seem to be as well built as my Phillipines 25 LTD Classis, but its good enough in my opinion.
Here's what I did to it:
Removed JP36, soldered a 220uf 35v cap in the holes (negative side of the cap goes toward the final).
Cut off the excess legs from the cap. Soldered a 1/2 watt resistor across the 220uf legs on the back of the board. I had read somewhere on this forum to use a 300 ohm resister but thats way to much. I used a 10 ohm resister and it worked perfectly (1.75 watt dead key). Anyone doing this mod should try different sized resistors - from 100 ohm down to 10 ohm until you find what works for you.
Next I added the ERF-2030 final and the companion part (I ordered these from Copper which is where I order ALL my radios and radio supplies). Also used a 68pf cap across C42.
Using a Dosy PM-1000 (I know its not a Bird 43)I checked my numbers and here's what I came up with after everything was finished:
Dead key = 1.75 watts
Swing = 29 watts and WAY LOUD AUDIO
The only draw back to the new Cobra 29 LTD Classic is the somewhat weak recieve. I adjusted VR1 to the max position and this really seemed to help. It still does not have the recieve as some of the other radios I have owned, but the audio is AWESOME.
