AM power is VR10. if running a linear, turn this down to 2 watts. if not, no more than 5 watts.
SSB power is VR11. turn this up to 15 watts, no more.
modulation is VR7. turn this all the way up, and dont clip any parts.

lots of mods for this radio on the forum. look to the left and learn about the SEARCH function.
good luck,
matt

the idea behind the soundtracker is actually pretty cool.
the way they did it, and the way it works in cobra radios is not.

the soundtracker is whats called a "compander".
meaning that it compresses your audio on TX and expands the voice portions of the RX without bringing up the noise level.

if you have any old Secret CB books lying around, they used to make something like this called the VSB-1 and they thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
i owned one about 15 years ago, but didnt know how to install it so i gave it away. DOH!
never ran across anyone who'd used one but i sure am curious to know how well they worked.
i know cobra's doesnt work very well at all.

To have the mic-audio by-pass the SoundTracker circuit, locate the 7-wire connector on the channel selector/ SoundTracker board, connector CON2. The wires are blue, green, yellow, orange, red, brown and black. Cut the yellow and red wires and splice them together. This will alow full modulation upon tune-up...

I own a Cobra 148 Sound Tracker that I used to use everyday and there was never any need to cut any wires to disable the feature. All I had to do is push the ST on/off button. With it "off" it worked like a regular 148 and with it "on" it sounded like poo. I have even heard of cbers leaving the circiut off and using the switch for something else. The ST was effective for reducing severe static like a super noise blanker but was a recieve blanker as well. Personally I did'nt care for it and wish that they would have just focused on build qaulity instead.

Did this mod last night on a friends ST 148GTL.
Took 5 min.
Worked great...no more brick wall holding back the modulation.
I had this radio dropped to me for a tune a month or so ago. Even (sorry to say) clipping the limiter didn't work and as a matter of fact made things worse.
Ended up with a "key up Peep/squeal" without the limiter and still hit a brick wall at around 10w with a 3.5 DK. SSB was not much better swinging 14 tops on a tone.
Now set at 3DK swings a healthy 16 with plenty of headroom for modulation and limiter intact!
SSB hits 20w easy.
Soundtracker..still works like an auto squelch in RX with button "on"
There may be other ways around this BUT for a quick 5min (reversable) mod...

Thanks again!

Hank, My Cobra 148 soundtracker is deadkeying 2 watts and swinging 18 plus AM and 21 watts SSB wether or not the soundtracker is on or off. I am using a 1969 final though. Is your 148 using a stock final? What did you have to do to remove the ST circuit? Just unplug it or cut wires?

Hotwire, the two wires are the mike-audio input and output to the SoundTracker circuit. What we are doing here is by-passing the circuit...not disabling it (the circuit still works on the received signal). If the audio was alowed to remain tied to the ST circuit, it (even when off) limmits the amount of maximum modulation. Hope this helps:-)

Worked well for me. Splice the ends going to the plug. Not coming out of the plug. Took me(newb) a couple tries to get that one right.
