I have a RCI 2950 old style. After it is on for a while the led display gets somewhat dimmer. (the black numbers). You can still see them, but they are not as crisp and noticeable as when you first turn it on. Thanks, Perry in KY. |

some of the old 2950's have a battery behind the display unit that needs to be changed.
ive never changed one but have read about it here on the forum.
try doing a search for "2950 battery".

Yeah I know where the battery is located. I thought the battery was just for the memory and so the radio would stay on the same channel etc. when turned off. Guess it would be worth a try..Perry |

I checked the voltage on the battery and it reads 3.6 volts. I think it is a 3 volt battery. Thanks, Perry in Ky... |

That radio has the computer and the LCD display split between two circuit boards, sandwiched together.
On the front of the display board is a tiny, tiny surface-mount trim pot. This is the 'contrast', or 'viewing angle' adjustment. It can get dirty, like any other variable resistor, and change value as the temperature changes, and the components around it warm up.
You have to remove the knobs and plastic front panel to see it. Can't remember if you must also remove the two bottom screws on the display, the ones that hold the two rows of push- switches in place, to get to it. Seems to me that it's behind the plug-in circuit board with the push switches mounted on it.
The trimpot is JUST below the bottom edge of the glass LCD, surface-mount soldered to the pc board. Just (carefully) turning it back ad forth a few times may clean it up. Just be sure you're viewing it from the same angle as when you'll be using the radio. Wouldn't want to adjust it for the wrong viewing angle.
If it's stubborn, a tiny drop of control cleaner may make it behave better. You'll need a really small tool, like a jeweler's screwdriver to turn it safely. Don't want to mangle it.
This is not the only thing that can change the contrast of the 'old' 2950 LCD, but it's the most common.
Now, this assumes you're referring to the contrast of the display, and NOT the brightness of the back lighting. That's a whole 'nother can of worms if the backlighting won't work right.

I took it apart and found the vr you were talking about. After taking the push button pad off I noticed it is accessible without taking off the pad. I put a tiny bit of contact cleaner on it and worked it gently back and forth for about 30 seconds. Set the contrast and it looks great. Now I got it on and waiting to see what happens, but I'm sure it will be fine. Once again thank you very much for your time. It is very appreciated. Perry in Ky.... |
