Well I have another TRC to add to my line up, the TRC 485, I see very few mods on to up the power and the modulation.I tried the posted audio mod on am but it dosent show very good results, alc adjustment dosent do much either.Am power about 4 watts with low level audio stock mic, SSB about 10 watts pep with audio not much better. As I said earlier the posted mods dont seem to do much.I have a TRC 451 that does about 20 pep on ssb and 10 am with peaks close to 20 watts with audio. So does anyone know of any mods that will pump up the TRC 485 a bit better?Tnx Bob CEF451

Update on the TRC 485, seeing how I am still recovering form knee surgery I have lots of free time so I took my 485 apart and did the clarifier mod, all went well but it only has about 3 1/2 kc swing from side to side.Does anyone have any further info that might make this swing abit more?

you can try putting a 5.6uH choke in series with the anode of the varactor diode(s).

any value between 1 and 10uH should work.
good luck,
matt

Hi kid, tnx for the info, i have a small choke but iam not sure which is the varic diode, not much info out there on the internet pretaining the schematic for this radio.Good little radio , small and when moded will cover 25.165 to 29.695.I also did the am audio mod and it sounds pretty good.maybe if you get time you might find a proper schematic on the web and point me in the right direction for the varic on the board.

Update on the TRC485, well I finally got around to doing the freq. mod. Man this mod was very tricky, I had to remove the complete front of the radio to get access to the PLL. The mod went smoothly and am now showing a freq range of 25.165 to 29.655,the only problem is that the vco scheme won't allow this much coverage.I am not interested in anything below Channel 1 but it would be nice to get it to work on 10 meters as well as 11. There is a mod for the vco that a friend of mine from the UK , EX BBC tech has and I will try that out when he sends it to me and I will post it with his permission.

I bought a 485 today for 75 bucks.
I did the band mod and unlocked the clarifier.
If you do the band mod, use the LCR button.

Find and cut both traces going to LCR button.

Jump 1 side of the LCR to the PIN29 side of the MODE SW.
Jump the other side of LCR to the PIN3 side of the NB SW.

I kinda like having a noise blanker so I did it this way, especially in the mobile.
