argggggg so what does a 2 pill 1446 box do in all reality? i saw 150 on swing 100 deadkey....is that about accurate? |

No..... I have a 2 SD1446 that I run off a power supply. NE viking Low Pass filter on the output side. I dead key a little over 100 watts and modulate to about 300 watts |

Lemme get this straight.... You are getting a REAL 300W out of 2 SD1446 transistors?....

What is the power supply voltage?

i've seen a 20 volt power supply push a custom-built 2-1446 amp past 500 watts PEP, don't remember dead key, but i think it was near 150. if you think the heat & smell were bad, you should've seen the way the copper tried to peel off the solid clad board!
****** makes a 2x1446. he claims it makes a bit more PEP then a 2x2290 at 15 volts, just under 300, which is about right. it should key about 80 at 15 volts. a commercially made 2x1446 will probably struggle to get past 175. |

My KL300P goes to about 150 at 13V before it looks NAAHS-TY on the scope. Those devices were never designed to come close to making 150 watts real power.

i'm not denying that, chad. ****** is a custom builder(edited out). it is class 'C'. even 80 dead key is a lot, but it'll do it. 20 volts was done to see how it would stack up against volted 2290's, & to drive in the 8 pill keydown class. as i said, ****** claims his 2x1446 does more then his 2x2290, but most of the 8 pill guys i've seen still use 2290's, no matter what the voltage. at a keydown, cleanliness & quality are bad words. unfortunately, some of those guys use the same style for the average QSO. |

I got cha Pat, know what you are saying. The 1446 seems to be a tough little transistor all things considered. Probably why they are used a bunch

Chad.... I have the power supply set at 15volts. The amp is a Power Plate 240V. Dead key 100 watts and modulate with an aaaaahhhhhh to 300 watts. I have a B&W low pass filter on the output of the amp. |

But.... What does it look like on a scope? How are your SSB reports? |

Audio reports are good of course. The scope can not be substituted for the human ear. Plus the low pass filter helps clean any harmonics up. |

Back to the original question...I've had a few 2X1446 Palomars (and the like) in the shack and I run them like any other Commercial kicker...Hi power mode then tune radio till I see around 40DK at amp. Recheck radio input wattage and should be under 4w. It should swing 120-150 average modulation and near 200 on a LOUD radio or under a tone or Ahhhhh
You could DK 100 but I'd be willing to bet you get neg swing in RMS mode. I like to keep a nice clean DK with plenty of headroom for modulation.
To somewhat answer your question Carl...I see same peak either AM or SSB as any of my radio peak the same whether AM or SSB. |
