If you read the other review I did on this radio in the user review section, ther reason for the loud volume at startup was due to a weak Volume pot, that the RF-Limited will replace for free.

Great review on the 257 I love mine ,at first I got reports of (down in the weeds) put on a Superstar 452 mic and now have excellent reports I will still keep my HR2510's but for the price the 257 can't be beat it out performs my $300.00 RCI2950DX

Why would you need to modify the clarifier? It already moves RX&TX (tied)right out of the box.:-)

I am relatively new to the forum. I've only being here for a few months now.

Today was the first time I got into the "Review" section and read a few of the "write-ups" on some of these radios and other products.

The one that was on the M-257 was VERY good. I have posted a few reports mtself on the forum in regard to the 257 when someone has asked for a comparison. THIS RADIO WAS MADE FOR SIDEBAND. I can't say enough good things about it. In the report, the good definately outweigh the bad.

The bulbs and volume control? In order for you to have seen them go out, that told me that you must have had AND used that radio for awhile BEFORE you did the report. Now that's the way a real review should be written on a piece of equipment. I AM IMPRESSED!!! I have seen a few other reviews done on this radio in the past and NOT ONE WRITER has mentioned the negative side of the M-257. Either they don't know or they didn't think it was worth mentioning.

A couple of years ago, I had ordered four of these from my supplier for resale in my shop. It wasn't until I sold the second one that I was actually able to hear the sideband mode of it when I sold and installed one in a friend's car who is a avid sidebander. After he left, I got on the air with him and was very surprised at the quality and sound of his sideband signal. WOW!!! I thought I was listening to a expensive Kenwood TS-50. I should add though that I had rewired his Astatic 575 to work on the M-257. With the tone control turned all the way down, the volume at 1/4 opened and mic gain set at 1:00, it produced a very FM-like audio. Just super smooth and clean.

After listening to that expensive sounding sideband audio, I took another one off the shelf. After setting it up, I installed it in my wifes car. WHY? Because she has a high-pitched shrill voice that can easily bend a sideband frequency. (And our dog is almost deaf because of her.) As much as we both love to use sideband, it just drives me crazy listening to her in that mode. I don't know if you have ever heard of such a thing before but it's true. A high-pitch female voice can sometimes make it almost impossible to clarify. No matter how well you think you have them clarified, they always sound off frequency.

Anyways, when I got her on that little Mag and a new Astatic 575, I couldn't believe my ears. I've never heard her sound so good on sideband before that moment. No frequency shifting. Sooo smooth and mellow. Now, if I could only get her to swallow it, she would be much more pleasent to listen to. Too late for our dog though.

Getting back to reviews, there doesn't appear to be too much that escapes you. You are not afraid to report the negatives right along with the positives. And that's what I call a REAL REVIEW!!!

But anyways, thank you so much for these reviews. They remind me of the "GREAT" FOX News Network Motto. "WE Report--You Decide". I hope other forum readers appreciate the reviews as much as I do.
