When this comparison was done was the 99 using the ground plane kit, or not..Just curious...And thanks for the review..I ran an Astroplane for years, and it was awesome..I now have an A-99 im fixxing to put up..thanks

Nope, no ground plane on the Antron, but everything else was the same. Same transmitter, same coax and length, same meter, same antenna height.

Thanks for a good report, I use a T233 on my ft840, I talk alot on the 26,400 mgz and also on 27,570 mgz, this antenna spreads well for me. 20ft off the ground, 81ft coax, all DX, skip talk, on LSB, Thanks, Duane

This antenna was an rf nightmare for me. I was bleeding over everything soon as I put it up. I switched to a maco 5/8 wave and never had a problem since.

tech 181 can you tell me did they use a 102" or 108" whip.I ask because i am making a project folded half wave out of a used ringo AR-10 i have.I am going to turn a hub to fit over the mounting base and mount my radials at a 45deg angle.This should eliminate the need for a matching network.I will remove the ring and matching rod.This if it works should make for an extremely wind resistant and tough little antenna against the weather.Iam a machinist and making the hub wont cost a thing just my time.I have been looking to do somthing with this antenna besides collecting dust.Do you think it will work?

It's interesting how the new starduster outperformed the A-99 in dx but locally didn't have the same punch as the A-99 but had the same signal. Just out of curiousity, did the local guys use A-99's themselves or similar antennas?

Here's what I'm driving at, consider: Some years ago I was a Shakespear Big Stick fan and even if another antenna ourperformed it I would favor the Big Stick. Cognitive Disonance is a factor when you ask the opinion of people on a religion, a product or anything. What we've been acustomed to is what we are drawn to. I wonder just how objective the local reports were? Did the locals know in advance this test was coming up? I doubt the folks out there in dx had any idea ahead of time and not knowing which one was which at first could only answer the first one is louder or the second. Food for thought.

That is a very good point but I am assuming Steve may have thought about that. I'm willing to bet they may have known before hand of the test and comparison of antennas but I doubt he told them which was which during the testing. And i'm thinking they probably weren't told for the good reasons that you just stated.

Lol. But, on the other hand, they may have known in advance of the testing and if so, that would warrent his complete test as inconclusive. No good. A complete failure. Hmmmmmmm.

Darn you Mike!!! Now you got me wondering. That no good guy.

When I test equipment I do not say anyting to anyone.

I just flip the Antenna Switch or Radio Switch, and then wait to see what they say or if they even notice anything different. Within 10 to 15 miles most do not even know the difference on Antennas.

And with condition's as they are those farther away have no idea what is going on.

I use a MFJ-1700B Transmitter Switch which allows me to use any of 6 radio's or 6 antenna's.
