I had a Galaxy Saturn years ago that drifted all the time. Someone about 14 miles from me owns it now as it has passed through many owners. Still Drifts. Have a couple friends who have owned drifting Galaxys. I'll let someone more knowledgeable in radio to answer your why question. I just know i will never own another one! JIM/PA/CEF 375

this is only what i have picked up from reading other posts, so dont take this as fact. from what i understand, the 10.240mhz crystal that galaxy uses is of poor quality, and this is the reason for the drift. if your friend replaces this crystal, it might just fix the problem. just dont order one from galaxy! get one from a reputable crystal manufacturer like jan crystals, or usa crystal corporation. (i think thats their name) im sure there are other views on this. matt |

Stop Drifting? Use an anchor after you drop 'em off a bridge! Just kidding...had to prime this topic for Pat. Honestly I have a Pluto which I understand is an 88 without echo? Nary a drift once its warmed 10min or so. A friend with a 95T also claims no drift. Either we got Monday radios or every other Galaxy owner got a Friday model. Hank |

freebird, usually, the drift problem exists on both AM and SSB, but you dont notice it much on AM. |

I have a SS 3900 GHP which I think has the same board as an 88 Galaxy. What I did to stabilize the RX was to take a little "grain of wheat" bulb like the one used to illuminate the S/RF meter and attach it to the 10.240 crystal with fusable electric tape. Then I connected it so it would come on when the radio is turned on. Now the crystal temperature stabilizes in about 2 minutes, and there is practically no drift after that point. Worked for me... |

I have a theory as to why Galaxy was named "galaxy" in the first place! Our galaxy (the Milky Way) is constantly moving (DRIFTING) at approximately 231,745 MPH, which is pretty quick! HMMM the galaxy we live in is drifting fast and galaxy radios drift, coincidence, I think not!!!

The crystal is only part of the oscillator circuit. The other components used in the oscillator circuit and the layout of that circuit on the board also contribute to frequency stability. I've heard from different places that the voltage to the oscillator circuit fluxuates and that is the culprit. Personally I think it's a combination of all of the above, but the only thing I need to know is that Galaxy radios are not suitable for my needs as I operate mainly SSB. |

You would be impressed with the 93T or 95T Hollowpoint. They are rock solid once warmed to operating temp. |

Thanks Hatchet, but I seriously doubt that I'd be impressed by anything with the name Galaxy on it. Once you've used a Uniden SSB chassis you become spoiled. |
