Getting back into Radio after a time out. Got rid of my Saturn what I'm looking for now is a new or "Vintage" base radio. I dont want another rack mount setup like the Saturn so that leaves out a bunch of good radios. All I'm looking for now is an AM/SSB base that can be modified to go 40 up and 40 down with a built in frequency counter or the ability to have a counter, with continuous readout, installed. Also if I get a Cobra 2000 or other "vintage" radio I will need a new tech to check it out for proper operation and adjust it accordingly for use "barefoot" or with possibly a 2 or 3 pill base amp. (no more than 350 or 400 watts) I am looking for suggestions on both pieces of equipment. OK I've rambled enough I'll just post this now. Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

cobra 2000's,uniden washingtons, cobra 135Xlr's and cobra 142's all make nice table top radios. all can be modified for channel expansion and all can have a frequency counter hard wired for continuos read out. the cobras always have had the nice tastful wood cabnets. also a nice vintage radio to have is always a Tram d201 or browning mark III with the addition of a siltronix vfo slider you can get expanded frequencies as well as hard wire a freq. counter to the slider for continuos read out. |

a 'vintage' radio is kind of like a 'vintage' car. a new model always (usually ) gets you here & there, the vintage one gets babied on most ocassions, but every once in a while you just gotta blow the cobwebs out of it . get something to keep you on the air, then search out the radio you always wanted..... |

Actually I'm looking now cause I won't be able to set up a base for a little while but I would like to find and have the whole base set up ready to go when the time comes which is why I'm looking now. I kinda was looking at the Galaxy 2547 but been seeing differing reports on it (poor this and that- Great this and that)that I would like to hear some reports from a reliable source like here before I take the plunge on one. Been kinda thinking of the 2547 and a KLV base amp like a 350 or 400 anyone have one they'd share opinions on? Plan to have a SSB mobile (Probably a Galaxy 959 I like Galaxy's equipment) up and running pretty quick though so I can get back in on the CEF nets on Saturdays. Hope to accomplish the mobile thing in the next few weeks. Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

After a Freq. Alignment on my 2547, I have no complaints with it at all. For a straight out AM\SSB it gets the job done. Tommy~852~CEF 750 Do They Make Anything Besides "GALAXY"?

Personally, besides the 2000, I always loved the Unidean Madison and Cobra 142 GTL. I don't know why the Washington always seemed to be more popular than the Madison. The Madison definitely had more features, and that old school mechanical clock that was built in is real vintage like. |
