Well, in a brilliant move of attention to detail I hooked up my jumper backward (meaning the red wire was to ground and the black wire was to positive) on a Cobra 150 GTL DX. The ensuing smoke and smell out of the unit let me know what I did wrong immediately.

So should I just throw this radio in the trash or can I repair it? Remember, I am the guy who hooked it up backward so my tech level is like -10.

Still experiencing some problems with sight and concentration from the accident- No that is not an excuse for hooking it up backward - That was just a stupid move on my part but am concerned if I will be able to handle the repair myself or not.

Maybe it is time to sell off a bunch of radios and amps and get the Magnum S-9. Did they ever come out with the 175 or 250 models?

smt....surface mount technol-o-gee, not sure where 'the' diode is on that radio, but just the same, remove the cover so you can see the inside of where the electrical plug goes. there should be plenty of tell-tale powder burns, ash & other assorted gunk. quite possibly-HOPEFULLY-there is no more wire going from the + (red wire) side of the plug connector to the board. THAT needs to be replaced along with the diode that is no longer going from + to board ground. well maybe not THAT extreme, just look for a burned wire & blackened diode going from + (red wire) side of connector to the board. not sure if they used a traditional diode or an smt type on the board, but, either way, that burned diode should have saved everything else.....kind of like the sacrificial zinc on the bottom of the outdrive....gives its life so that we may talk on (or boat on, as it were....)
