I bought a New RCI 2995DX a few months ago, and it started acting up a few weeks ago, at random the display would get real bright and a noticable hum would come through, its always had a slight hum from the day i plugged it in but hardly noticeable. Now when i turn it on it starts fine and receives fine but as soon as i key up it hums really bad and then i lose half my receive and the radio continue to hum with the readouts very brightly lit, the outlet checks out fine and no other equipment has issues with the source, swrs all check out good as well as jumpers and coax. Has any one else experienced this issue? The radio was tuned so will rci still cover the warranty? Help its only a few months old! |

My 2985DX had a slight hum from new and after a few months the display would dim almost completey out when keying mic. I think the power supply or caps are going bad. I called RCI and they said just to send it back and they will fix it under warratee So if I were you since it`s new send it back and let them look at it. They are real nice to work with. AP |

Don't send a radio back to RCI if the radio has been modified with Cb channels. Or it will not come back that way, as they will remove the modification. Contact where you purchased the radio to see what you need to do. |

If you just have the modual pluged in for cb then just remove it and send it. when you get it back just plug it in again. |

RCI is pretty good at working on radios under warrenty even if it was tuned buy some other tech as long as it was not butchered and screw driverd to death or cut parts. they can tell if a good tech worked on it or someone who has no clue. |

That was just general info Rog. Some older radios used a jumper to achieve the Mod. And some new to the hobby have no clue about the jumper or modual. Just didn't want to see anybody disappointed after they got there radio back and have to spend extra $$$ in getting Mod re-installed. |

If you ask here on copper and feel comfert in opening it up yourself someone can walk you through un modding it. It depends how new the radio is it might have a jumper or modual to take off or move. That way when you get it back from RCI you can just mod it back yourself and wont need get it modded somewhere else. Hey Lon, can you jump in and help? AP |

Madigan, The Copper Tech did not do anything that would void your Factory Ranger Warranty. If you send it to Ranger for repairs you would not need to send it back to Copper. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9CEF CVC#2 |

Lon, He is not worried about the warranty, he is worried RCI will unmod it which they will. he wants to know if he must ship it back to copper again to get it modded back. Maybe you could talk him through modding it when he gets it back. It is pretty simple I think but mine has the modual and his might have the jumper which I dont know how to do. |

What if a Electronics store puts in a 11 meter modification??? Can it still be sent back to Ranger to be fixed, without them removing the Mod? Or should it be sent back to Electronics store to be fixed? |

Airplane1, Road_warrior, The Conversion Mod that the Copper Tech does uses a Factory RCI/Ranger part for the conversion. I just spoke with the Copper Tech and he said should Ranger USA remove the conversion module from a radio that you purchased from Copper Electronics and you paid for the conversion when you placed your order to contact him and he will replace it at no charge. But what about shipping charges, you would need to pay for the shipping to RCI but then would you need to pay shipping to Copper to get it replaced after you get radio back from RCI? |

Airplane1, If it happens that Ranger should remove anything you would then need to call the Copper Tech as he is the ONLY one who can answer your questions should it happen. Should you find that Ranger has Removed the Channel Modification after your radio is returned to you from Ranger PLEASE call 1-800-626-6343 and ask for the Copper Tech during regular Copper Business Hours. Should he be busy or on another line PLEASE leave a MESSAGE and include YOUR FULL NAME and YOUR PHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED so he can return your call to help you. Well, Good news!! Ranger just so happens to be only 20 miles away, so i simply dropped off the 2995, making sure it was on the upper 28 mhz when shut down, does this radio require some kind of module for 11 meters, ive been in the hobby for over twenty years and i am very literate with electronics, i am more than capable of restoring the frequencies with instuction if need be. generally i mod all my own stuff, but with the 2995 being "smt", well, guess i have to learn sooner or later |

I remember seeing on the copper bargain page a 2950 that had been sent to RCI for repairs and the description said it could not be converted to 11 meters. Do they do more than just “undoing” the mod that would make it more difficult to convert? |

Madigan, If Your 2995 is the newer version It will be easy to mod yourself. It just gets a conversion modual pluged into a socket behind the freq. counter. I did mine and it only takes about 5-10 min. to do. If older version it is just a jumper to be plugged in. AP |

Well if you baught it from Copper I would ask them for one of the moduals for it. if they did the mod for you I would think they would send you a new modual to do the mod your self and save the shipping cost of sending radio back to Copper and then back to you. these radios are heavy and cost pretty much to ship and I would try and save every way you can. |

i think thats what tech 808 was saying earlier; if RCI removes the module that copper put in; the copper tech will send you one, free of charge. they are about the size of a small transistor, so shipping would be very cheap. good luck with your radio! matt |

When this happens it normally means that your bi-polar transistors on back are going out. When that happens it can let as much as 16 to 24 volts thru the radio which accounts for the bright display. They should be(2) 2N3771 transistors at the back left of the radio when the radios facing you..This is a know weakness for these radios.I have one myself. If you run the radio at about 10 to 15 watts deadkey you should be fine but go above it on am and its a matter of time until it will take them out. |

Got my radio (2985dx) back from ranger and like I tried to tell ranger I thought it was the transformer causing the display to dim. they finaly after second time sending it back they fixed it right.the work order says they changed the transformer and power pass transitors. the display does not dim a bit no mater how the power or mic gain is set. If anyone is haveing the dimming problem I would talk to ranger and demand they look at the transformer and power pass resitos like on mine. Hope this helps someone out there. But remember mine was dimming bad, AP |

What they are calling power pass transitors are your bi polar transistors on back. |

yes pogo that is correct, If ranger was not going to fix it the second time around I was going to do it myself. I was going to put a new transformer in and change the cTO-3 transistors in the back to 2N3771 transitors and then turn the pot for power supply voltage to 14.2 volts. If it gives me any more trouble I will be doing this to it. AP |

i did one easier and cheaper then all of those costly repairs. i bought my 2995 new and simply unconnected the power amp for the power supply and ran the power amp section to my 30 amp power supply. no more worrying about any chance power supply will fail because the radio only uses like 2-3 amps off of the internal supply and the amp pulls 22 amps off of the external one. this is very easy to do. good luck. |
