while waiting for my new amp to arrive I decided to check the dead key on my rci 2980 with the rf out put on low and found it to be higher on ch.1 @ 6 watts and ch.40 @ 2 watts this is according to the meter on the radio. Is their some thing wrong with my radio ? why does it change from hi to low as I move up in freq.? and will this have a affect on the new amp. I ordered(klv-1000)Thanks for any information in advance

10ring, do you know what your dead key should be?

If you have a good dummy load, you could check this out and see if it is your radio. I would think that the big difference, 6 watts to 2 watts, is probably a bit much for such a narrow range of frequencies. If you don't have a dummy load, check the SWR associated with your numbers above, you may see similar results. It is not possible to tell from here, but I would guess what you are seeing is related to the matching curve of your antenna.

It would also be hard to say how it will affect the amp.

What kind of antenna do you have and where is center frequency?

I am using a maco 5/8 wave ant. and my swr is the lowest on ch.20 @ 1.2 my dead key also goes down when I start going below ch.1 I run a d-104 desk mic. but I turn the mic gain all the way down on the radio when I check the dead key and swr.

What's your swr read on ch 1 and 40? If ch 1 has higher swr, then that's your culprit. If the swr is equal, your radio most likely needs alignment.

Ok just re checked my swr's and this is what I have @ 26.6050=1.8 @ ch.20=1.3 @ 27.6050=1.7 I realize they my not be perfect but a problem? To make maters worse my last two digits of my five digit freq. counter on the radio just started blinking and fading in and out. Any fix for this? just not having much luck with radios lately. I do appreciate this help that is being given to me Thank You. 10ring

no a 1.9 is just a little high a 1.7 is a little high but a 1.3 is awesome. I dont reccommend running an amp at 1.7 for a long time.
