Smoked the 6.8 resistor at the driver and two 10's at the first pair. They looked like they had put in 1/4w and wonder if it might be OK to try new 1w and see what happens? Something else to check?

can't really tell what i smoked. after the thick smoke, smell of the resistors burning, sound of the caps popping, & general black, melted condition of the inside of the case, it doesn't really matter anyway. and yes, they do look smaller then the ones from 15 years ago. |

How many watts did you put into the amp and at what voltage? |

Only 5w and 15v. Normal conversation type use not keydown or fast keying. Problem was a shorted 259 at the antenna feed. SWR was at 2+ and amp did not unkey.
OK, suppose one pair of transistors are toast,does it make a huge issue if the pairs are matched but not all four? I have another set of 2879's but the batch is different.

I now finally understand what the term "10 ohm smoke"means. It means when you burn up your amp, It's the smell of resistors, and not transistors fouling up the air. To bad I have never had that experience.

the easiest way to convert the texas star to handle more input voltage is by selling it and buying a custom, built from the beginning to handle 18 or 20 volts or more. there are no shortcuts-you need to spend all the $ to get the higher voltage & get it charged, you can't just take a mass produced amp & 'mod' it to handle 50% volts with smoke. |

You got two choices, bb, either a Lees-Neville alternator, and a dial a volt box, or the more common thing, three 6 volt deep cycle batteries, to equal 18 volts. But if you do that with the texas star, if your model doesnt have a fan, invest in one.
