Yes, it's true. I had taken the pratice test on QRZ 45 times since Tuesday. And it paid off big time! I got 32 out of 35 questions right.
I was the first one done with the test, and the testers asked if I wasnted to go through my answers. But I said no, I was ready to have them checked.
So I am now officially a Ham operator. I should have my call sign up on the FCC site by next Thursday. At least that is what they said at the test site.
So there, after many years of thinking about it, I have done it. I feel good about it to. Can't wait to get a portable 2 meter and hit the airwaves! |

Congrats and welcome to the world of no sleep! I stayed up till 3:30AM chatting Friday night! What kind of rig are you thinking about? Be prepared for sticker shock at first but it will pay off in the end!

A tri band HT will need a crazy antenna to make it work on 6M if you want to work DX. Keep the tri band in the house and go with a dual band HT  I was going to go with a tri-band but went all mode/all band and spent more, but just once. Keep in mind that most of the tri-band stuff is FM only and the 6M DX is rampant at times on 6M SSB, with a HORZ polarazation. 6M FM is non-existant around here.

Well we'll give it a try. Not to much 6 meter here either. But I'll have something to play with. I went with the Yaseu VX-7R BLACK. Has loads of fun stuff to try out. Winter is coming, and I will need something to do! |

should have checked out an 'all mode' 6 meter radio....even from an auction, you seem to have good luck there, 'pop! ft690, ic551, rci5054, mfj9406, any version of 'em with even just a loop WILL get some SSB DX! you could spend the winter designing & building loops, yagis or even quads for 6m!!! DX there will be little if any til dec/jan, then again very little if any til may. but from what i understand, there was DX on 6 more frequently then ever this past year-even during the normal lean season. but, 6m is your best shot at DX with a tech license.
during this weekends contest, some locals were discussing some 6m FM DX contacts to the midwest & down south with H/T on a homemade antenna hung out a 2nd story bedroom window!!! |

But... The REAL question is... When are you going to get on the Copper ham CEF nets????!!
When the sunspot sycle gets headed up soon, the 10 and 12m CEF nets are going to be awesome. Even for the not-yet licensed, they will be able to listen in and at least copy some CEF members they wouldn't be able to log on 11m. |
