Grumpy,
I had a rci 2990 dx and the only thing I saw was wrong with it was the power supply was not big enough to run all the power, when turned up.

I was told to check around to see if you could upgrade the power supply in it.
Mine worked fine with no complaints, as long as I kept the wattage tuned down. So I just sold mine, so I didn't have the headache of trying to fix it. Now mind you this was my radio, might just been my radio.
Mine would do all sorts of crazy things when you cranked it up, this by no means is a technical answer, just my .02 worth.

The most important thing is keeping it cool. It will get hot even with a 15-20 watt keyup. If it doesn't have the fan kit, get one or put a small fan behind it blowing on the cooling fins and regulators. Other than that problem, they are good radios.

Grumpy,

Like Scrapiron said they are Good Radios but you DO NEED the Fan Kit added to it.

R10-10130 SRA-2990CF,Fan Kit

I loved our 2990DX until the frequency display board/CPU went out and have been trying to find one for over 2 years now as Ranger discontinued making them.

So I have a like new / DEAD 2990DX sitting here.

I also use the Fan Kit on our 2995DX and Galaxy Saturn Turbo.

Grumpy,
The weak spot in these radios seems to be the power supply, I have had several friends who had them, and they had problems with the supplies. That being said I have had two, and never had a problem, the radio is a pleasure to use, and the audio is awesome. I use a silver eagle on mine.

I am New here, so I don't know if I am in the right place to ask a question or not. But here goes, I have a RCI-2990 and it powers up and I have checked all the voltages in the Radio and they are all Ok till it gets to the front to the CPU (DPT-295041Z) and then nothing what so ever. The ? is, is the CPU Out and if so will the DPT-295042Z CPU work in this Radio! Thanks!
