I would agree that the rci-2985DX is the Base version of the 2950DX mobile. (The NEW one with the SMD board and the Green Display) I have a 2958DX base rig and am VERY happy with it. I have it set for 10 watts AM and about 25 watts on SSB. I run an Astatic 575m6 OR a DM-452 and both sound great. I would highly recommend the 2985. It has variable RF power so you can turn it down if you have a low drive amp. I use it with a Palomar SKIPPER 350HD base amp and it works great. Nice loud and Clear audio with no distortion. Good luck with finding one as they are out of production. They do come up for auction now and then so that is an option. Thats where I bought mine. 73 for now and God Bless, John, CEF 507 |

can anyone tell me how well it`s receive is on the 2985DX. I have the money finaly for a good radio and am torn between the S9 and 2985DX. I like the 2985DX features like split freq. and the 1mhz,100khz,10khz,1khz and 100hz tuneing steps + scanning. S9 dont have that but I do hear lots of great reports on this forum about it. Help me make up my mind, money is trying to burn hole in my pocket. I am afraid I will end up spending it on something foolish instead of a radio. AP |

Or, should I save money and buy a 2950DX and use my power supply? the 2950dx draws a mear 4.8 amps at full power. I would be getting the same radio and saving about $175.00. Or S9 and save about $108.00. I am having a very very hard time making up my mind. Please, If anyone has the radios I`m talking about let me know what you like and dislike. Thanks, AP |

Roger-Get out the sewing kit to fix those pockets...LOL...I wish i could help you decide, but, i never owned S-9 or 2950. Maybe if you do a search on these radios on the forum it may help...Good Luck! |

Airplane1, if you are still around, what did you decide? I'm looking at the 2985dx seriously as my next real base radio. I've been running a mobile and doing great with it but miss the big base radio. I think the 2985dx would be worth the extra money and look better sitting on your desk than a mobile radio. I'm getting closer to clicking that purchase button everyday, and I better hurry before the last of these is sold! Mikefromms |

Someone should put out a clone of or updated version of the Cobra 2000. Use that same double conversion RX with some updated TX features, like speech compression. Throw in some blue LEDS and you'd sell a bunch of them. |

Mikefromms, I am still around. I got the RCI/ Ranger 2985DX and I love the features and am real happy with the reports I get on it. I did not get it ligned up after the conversion though and recomend you get it aligned if you get one. I think the ssb receive is a little noisy but an alignment after conversion will help. I love the unlimited freq coverage on this radio and scan feature + the adjustable power output so I can run an amp. Roger |
