Ok I have a weird problem with my old Yaesu Memorizer that hopefully some one can throw some light on. The problem is when transmitting (even keying the tx by shorting the pins on the socket, so I know it's not the mic) the radio does one of 4 things:
1) Transmits normally (once in a blue moon)
2) Transmits OK AFTER a 1-2 second delay.
3) Does not transmit and the display clears except for the last digit (0 or 5), but does switch from receive.
4) Absolutely nothing.
I have lost what little hair I had trying to work this one out. Any suggestions?

I've seen these radios but I'm not too familiar with them. It does sound like a bad relay. I did find a link refering to it's replacement / modification that might help.

I also saw that there's a yahoo group for the FT-227 as well. If all else fails, maybe you could get some advice from the group.

Ronin, I'd have thought the same but no relay, all transistor switched - according to teh circuit diagram in the manula. But then again the manual shows a 4 pin mic plug and the radio has 6 pin one, so maybe I shouldn't trust the manual.

Hi Simon, Yeah, it certainly sounded like a relay. I saw on that link to a site that there were several variations/versions of the 227 which I wasn't aware of. I have a fair amount of older Icom gear but always liked the FT-227's style of radio. Hopefully you'll get an answer from someone here or on the 227 yahoo group. I wish you luck!

Well thew relay question was answered by the site you suggested - this thing had already been modified and had the solid state relay installed. This one seems to be a latter one as it is designated the 227-ra.
I'll keep playing with it and find the problem eventually.
