I hear 60 watts on Am and 80 watts on SSB. I like the bigger mic as well, would love to test one out for sure!

Thanks Tech 808! I can't wait to see it. I did read that amp will do over 100 watts. It should be a nice little radio. I think I want one.

i used to get excited over magnums' 'new radios'. not anymore. after the self destruction of my blue mosfet 257, i would have to look & think real hard before buying another magnum. the 257hp is the same as the original non-mosfet radios, the only difference is the mosfet finals via the addition of the fx75 amp, and the larger mic. there is nothing to make this radio any 'better' then its previous incarnations. it's only 20-30 watts output higher then what i had-only 1 or 2 db more, well under a half S-unit on somebody's receive meter. i am sure there will be a premium to pay for the new mic, added mosfets & metal case & internals of the amp unit, but i seriously doubt it would put the 257hp in a price range that makes it more desirable then the omegaforceHP. yes, i bought the mosfet 257 for its small size, and bragged about reputation. the 'small size' is now a moot point with the amp hanging off the back. and pretty much anything good i had to say about it is no longer spoken. there was no quality control, and basically from the moment i removed it from the box. what has been done to change it on the current run? probably nothing. IF i was to buy another magnum, it would be the omega HP....then again, its CPU is the same as that of the 257, so my mobile-receive-noise issues probably would remain, which would dissuade me from buying a CPU controlled magnum.
my thoughts? nah, i don't think so.

OMG look at the @$$ on that thing...so much for a compact unit?? I was hoping to install one of these in my Jeep Wrangler. Guess it will be a "base" radio for me now. Still can't wait to get my paws on one of these bad boys.

Have they released the MSRP on this one yet? I am real curious how much this one will jump up in price compared to the last model.

I just stumbled across one of these at another online (name withheld) CB retailer. $219.95 + another $25.00 for an alignment.

yea, i saw that one....i can't remember if that is what the last ones were going for here or not. i know i paid $169 for mine, it was 1 of the 1st blue/mosfet 257's copper got. at THAT price, i LIKED it. it went to $189 here right after, i seem to remember it being over $200 before they went out of stock, but i may be wrong. if the HP was to sell at $219 or higher, i'd go for the omega HP, more bang for the buck i'd say, but size was the reason for the 257 in the 1st place. i think it would be better to add the amp to the bottom like the newer rci/ranger & s9-175, or get the finals INSIDE the radio & add cooling at the back like they normally have, just 'wider' rather then sticking out so much.
on the other hand, i've 'outgrown' the 706mk2g i sometimes use mobile & should probably step up to the ic7000, but i'm not prepared to spend a grand right now.

Wondering what size amp power supply will this run off of? I run my blue face 257 on a 12 amp and it does fine. Anyone have any ideas?

Glad you are doing well!!

I have 2 older style 257's one amber face and the other the cool blue, and I've been happy with those thinking about adding the new 257HP to the collection... but as with any "new" product I would like to see other peoples thoughts first... but knowing Magnum's reputation I am sure it's a good sound and solid radio.

Thanks again...

Lon – one more question…do you find it necessary to pay the extra bucks to have this radio tuned, aligned and expanded? Or does it come from the factory pretty much ready to go? I can expand myself.

Bill,

Personally I always do my own Conversion's, Align, Peak & Tune, And I set everything to 90% for my own personal use. I do NOT like blowing my radio's up and no one can tell if I'am running it at 90% or 100%.

BUT! I have the equipment to do my own.

The way the newer radio's are manufactured now if you want maximum performance have it tuned, aligned and expanded at time of purchase to keep your factory warranty intact.

Upgraded from blue face 257LP to the new HP. tested from house and found the audio much stronger than the LP. the extra watts don't hurt either.

installed in car and find the receive is a little better on the noise problems(noticeable)

i powered the LP from my cigarette lighter and it did fine. I put the HP in and rapidly found out that it could get enough juice for the radio. i went to the battery. plenty of juice but my SWR all the sudden when through the ruff causing tx to shut off. i cant even measure it.

i pulled in the drive after work today and the swr was 1.6 and all the sudden it when to the sky again. this happened a couple of time.

can someone point me in the right direction here.

setup
08 Honda civic four door
257HP
wilson 1000 on the trunk lip left side
SWR Meter radioshack

Antenna ?
Grounding?

thank you for your advice

The power wires from the radio to the battery, try to shorten the length of them. I assume you had to attach extra length to the radio power wires to reach the battery? Was this the only modification made since the previous setup? There is a technical explanation for this but to keep it simple long power wires can sometimes act as antennas. Higher power setups especially are plagued by this problem .

Is your trunk lid fiberglass or metal? Some cars now have fiberglass trunks.
Make sure that the two screws holding the Wilson 1000 to the trunk lip are making contact with good clean bare metal.
Trunk lids sit on rubber and hinges are not that well connected to the body. You might try adding two bonding straps from the trunk lid to the car body on each side of the trunk.

the [5] is a khz. so channel 40 would read
27405
if ya change it to ]0] will read
27400
in all honesty ive had 2 magnums a delt and omega
your better off using it with the freq counter jmo.
if your on ssb say 38 lsb and ya hear go down 5 khz
you,ll now hear them on 27380
this is all if ya change that 5 to a 0 . under normal operations you want to leave it as a [5]
this is why imo using the 5 digit counter is much easier and you see what im talking about.
