I just got my Magnum 257 from Copper the other day and am more than pleased with it so far but there is only one thing that is bothering me about it, the variable when turned more than a quarter of the way completly maxes out the meter. I know hot to adjust it so that it doesnt do that but is this "normal" for the radio coming straight out of the box? To me it almost seems like they would have set it up better from the factory so it doesnt peak the meter until 3/4 turn or so.
Oh and off the main subject but is there an easy way to put talkback into these radios? I did it on my 148's, 29's and ect. by jumping the ext speaker plug with a resistor can it be done that same way on the 257?

but the radio on a dummyload no antenna/amp/meters nothing then check it
then if meter still reads high ya said ya
know how to adjust.ffrom what ive been told
by now ham opt. dummy loads are perfect 1.0
swr with 50 ohms.a mismatched antenna will
in most cases cause the problem your seeing
and most of the time will make your ext.meter
show different output levels then what ya have
as far as tb mod i have no idea..sorry

hey Outkast, the only way I know of for TB in that radio is how I did mine, a UTB-1 board that is built by the gentleman that helped design the radio, and it works great.

I would use a watt meter to check the output and chances are when you put the extra coax inline the meter may stop maxing out. If output audio sounds good, deadkey to swing ratio is what it should be and your swr is good I would'nt worry. Heck I don't even look at my radio and amp meter anymore cause I don't think they really show me anything accurate or even useful besides giving a recieve signal report.

Oh I am not worried about it and have already adjusted the meter so it isnt at full when the power is down. I was just wondering if anyone elses radio was like this from the factory. With the variable all the way down it dead keys about 1 1/2watts with it all the way up it dead keys about 25 Watts give or take some. I originally set it like the mods guide on here says so it lights up the third bar at 5 watts but that seemed a bit low because the fifth bar lit up at about 10 watts then. Witch seems low because that is only about half way up on the variable. I now have it set so the second lights up at 2 watts and the third rf bar lights up at 10 watts and the fifth lights up at about 15 watts. I think maybe the mods should have been updated a little for the new ERF-2030 models.
