Using on the base with a RCI 2980.
How many watts input should I give this amp on AM and on SSB?, and what would be minimum amperage required to run this amp?. |

Boy, when you answer a question.......
ALL the info I was looking for.
I'd heard ALL KINDS of varying answers .75W DK-6W, 25% of total expected output etc., etc..
This makes it REAL SIMPLE for a newbie like me

i have only seen 1 dx399 & it had 2879's in it, but i heard of another with 1446's in it, so....
turn mic gain to zero, & adjust radio power til amp dead keys 60 watts if 2879's or 45 watts if 1446's. turn mic gain up til it swings around 240 (2879's) or 180 (1446's)on a PEP meter. on SSB, adjust mic gain for same swing on a PEP meter, or until amp output stops increasing.
the one i saw was brought to me because its owner was looking for 400 watts. ain't happening with 2-2879's in a texas star. we 1st had to fix his antenna setup(mobile) & get swr down from about 3.5:1 to a useable 1.2:1. after swr was good, output dropped from nearly 400 to just under 240. didn't matter because it was all reflected power anyway with the high swr, and it got out much better once adjusted. he added fans and dead keys around 100 watts now. he gets out fine on SSB with the +/- 240 watts & makes some contacts on AM too. he uses it with a mostly stock cobra 148. |
