I picked up a nice looking Siltronix 1011D and the FD-1011 frequency display today at a hamfest for $30.00 which I figured how could you go wrong.
It turns on but I could not hear anything on any of the active channels around here. Does anyone know anything about these oldies? I remember them from the good ole days as being one of the radios to have, and would like to see if I can get this thing talking. I may just be doing it wrong.

Also, what mic is recomended as it did not have one?

Capt ..... TRANSMIT with a 2nd radio near to the 1011 !!!!! NOT CONNECTED TO IT !!! And see if you can hear the other radio. If you can hear the other radio see if the 1011 transmits .

If you cannot hear it since this is a 10 meter radio you will need a schmatic to go trouble shoot it.

I don't know of anyone here in Tampabay who works on old Swans.

Well, I had the 1011 on my desk and hooked up to an antenna, and transmited on my base radio thru the IMAX out back, did not hear anything.

I downloaded the manual for the radio and frequency display, so now I guess I'll try and figure it out. Man, it's been a long long time since I've been inside one of these old type radios, kinda brings back memories of a 13-14 year old kid tinkering with his radio.

Anyways, if anyone know of someone who works on these things, let me know.

Capt ....

If you dont have a generator and at least a schmatic your dead in the water working on a set like that. At 30 years old there is a good chance of the power supply caps being bad and any carbon based resistors. What you have there seems to be a failure in the VFO/injection part of that radio but without being able to apply a signal to the IF and see if it is even working i'm only guessing. Swans are not a highly rated radio the Swan 260 was openly called the "TOO-DRIFTY" but for what they were there ok. Now it becomes a problem of how much do you want to invest. If all else fails see if you can find a 1011 users group on yahoo or MSN.

go to yahoo and search for siltronics/swan user group. John Bruchey used to work for swan and still works on these. He just repaired my swan 350c. I also have a swan 260 and 2 - 1011D's. A tube tester is needed very badly for these. However, the caps dry out and go bad as well as the resistors. They r well worth repairing. tony/n5jva/cef 259
