i am looking at getting one of these radios. i have a few questions. are they still available new? where? i havent heard too much about these radios but with the ease of the channel conversion and the dual meters it looks to be right up my alley. is the receiver dual or single conversion? are there any known bugs? is the removal of the ALC the problem or are the diodes that inhibit RX during TX not strong enough? i would appreciate any tech help with this as well as any user reports. thank you in advance. matt |

Sorry, but No longer made. There were good 40 channel radios and with the Channel conversion not too bad. Never seen any reason to Clip or Remove Q30 The Texas Ranger 696F SSB Base has far more features and will perform 100% better. You probably have not heard much about them in the past as several batches of them had problems and after the conversion they really did not have that great of performance. Just my personal thoughts on them after owning several of them. Lon Tech808 |

The CBS 1000 radios were alright, but I would say that the Texas Ranger 696F base or the Galaxy DX 2547 base would give you better modulation right out of the box, no need to mess with anything. I have a Commanche Warrior 10 meter radio that is very much like the CBS 1000, and while it works well, my DX 2547 sounds better.

thanks lon, that is exactly the info i was looking for. what does the texas ranger 696f look like on the inside? by that i mean what other radios use the same chassis? i know i'm always asking about chassis equivelents, but it's the only way i can relate to a radio i've never seen. thanks again lon. |

Kid Vicious I owned a cbs 1000. I used it several years. It was alright. I got a lot of compliments on it. I had extra channels in it. All in all it wasn't a bad radio. It got really hot. I had to set a fan beside it to keep it cool. The buttons didn't hold up well. Cherokee had a few reconditioned ones they were trying to sell. I wouldn't pay too much for one. I got mine for 100 bucks at a pawn shop. If you're looking to save some money get one. If you have some money to spend get something else. Wendy |

thanks wendy, the input i have gotten here and the info i have found on other sites is leading me away from these radios. i think i will be reconsidering the cbs1000 and continuing my search for a 100% virgin 142gtl. |
