I have a question about setting compression level on my new Kenwood TS 480HX.
The Kenwood has variable compression, mic. Gain and TX/RX DSP audio tailoring. When I engage the compression with the mic. gain set by the book with the ALC. The audio drops, making the compression basically useless. Do I need to disengage the mic. Gain when I set the compression? Or do I use the compression without the mic gain? Or is the DSP Tailoring getting in the way? I'm following the book to the letter, but this isn't working.
From what I understand you set the compression to just below the peak of the set bar on the ALC. So it's set to about 9 db, and once in awhile it might peak at 10 db, but rarely. Then it says to go to the mic. gain and do the same there, set the mic. gain so the peak is set just to the end of the set bar, not going over the end, but peaking on the end at about 9 to 10 db. So the two are both set to just below maximum on the suggested settings. But I get better reports with the Compression Turned Off.
I'm following the instructions, but maybe I'm missing something. Can someone give me a hand with the compression settings on the newer Kenwood’s?
I believe that in general most radios are supposed to be set so that the ALC just barely moves on the meter when the compression is turned on, and that shows that it’s set at the peak. But my understanding is that Kenwood has the bar to make adjusting the ALC more accurate and easier.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
