well, i just got a TRC-448 off auction site, and it arrived today. havent gotten to turn it on yet, and will have to wire a mic for it, but so far... wow!!! this looks to be quite a radio. there are FOUR transformers in it. a 7.8mhz crystal filter. lots of big filter caps. this board is STUFFED with parts. cant wait to see how she talks! anyone have or had one of these? what did you think? matt |

got to play with the 448 today, and i have to say, the receive is quite nice, like 148gtl nice, i cant say yet, but it seems like a very low noise floor. too soon to tell yet. cant seem to find a 5 pin DIN connector in town, so the mic may have to wait. its got some flickery LED's and im not sure if LED's do that when they are really old or not, so i havent decided what to do about this yet. the only problem i see is that it uses two separate PC boards one in front of the other, and there is no support between them, just a small gap. the chassis metal is quite thin too, and i can see where in a mobile environment, this board could get flexed alot. mine seems ok, nothing changes when the board is pressed, but im going to reinforce it anyway with some aluminum angle stock. i love the S-meter! its graduated well, and seems quite accurate as compared to my 2000gtl. if you havent seen a picture, try to find one. i think its cool. going to give it a full alignment hopefully this weekend. its in SAMS 251 if anyone has it. this manual also has the 2000GTL in it. matt |

I used one of these for many years as base. Folks modified these radios for extra frequencies, but I left mine totally 100% stock. Used a Turner +3 base mic and an Archer .64 omnidirectional ground plane. There were no weak links in the chain. Great radio. |

man that sounds like a sweet setup! i have heard that those archer .64 wave antennas were AWESOME!!! saw on on ebay new in the box but couldnt afford it. if went for about 160.00! i read in the secret CB that has the channel conversion in it, that you're not supposed to run a power mic with that radio. i guess the turner worked well since you kept using it. they are one of my favorite mics. anything you remember about that radio is helpful to me. thanks for the reply, matt |

For a barefoot station, the Archer .64 was the best CB base antenna available. The base of mine was barely 12' off the ground. It out-talked everything else in the neighborhood. Its days came to an end when a messenger from above - a bolt of lightning - came to take it to the big scrap metal yard in the sky. The lightning strike fried the tuning coil and that was the tragic end of my .64. |
