I'm just wondering which radio you like the best and why do you like it the best? Like what reasons do you have for liking that radio or the company that makes it? I'm looking to buy a new radio and I don't know for sure which one I want. I've seen the new magnum radios and they look pretty nice but galaxy has put some nice looking radios out too. I really want something that is a real talker especially on the super bowl.

if yajust want a am/fm only radio id get the connex4300-300.what a great powerful radio
by itself or as a driver for that 8pill or bigger
if ya want ssb id look at the magnums9-80
and ranger2970dx. both great ssb radios

No matter what radio FM IS ILLEGAL ........
Why give the FCC a flashing red light as far as your station ... JUST MY OPINION ....

Hello Chronic, The Hotwire mobile really gets down with my Connex 4800. All stock and the audio is extremely clean and killer loud! I always loved the smooth audio of a properly setup Connex in the AM mode and with the 4800 the SSB really makes this rig shine! Of course now the 4800 is discontinued but if you can find one in good condition or N.I.B. I definatley recommend the purchase. Best if the insides have not been messed with by some knuckle head, leave it stock except for the conversion and drive deadkey. Also the Connex radios are pretty simple. Not a bunch of toys and needless bells and whistles besides echo and T.B., Its all radio!
Now for a SuperBowl type radio I would probably look for a nice Cobra 2000, 29, or 148, pre 1994 of course! Just right to work that little driver box to work the BIG box!
Tell you what man. I have heard a lot of nice sounding radios,old Cobras, Uniden Grants, President Lincolns, RCI 2950's, Magnum 257 and S-series, and even 1 or 2 of the new Ranger 158's and a Stryker 440hp. All was impressive that was done up right but I still have yet to hear one with the Connex audio (am mode) I love so much. A few know what I'm trying to describe. There is something about the Connex audio that sets it aside from other radios. Of course this is my opinion now and the next guy I hear on the radiop is gonna say his radio rocks 10 times better but man my Conny is smokin! And I know this!

I agree with Harve  ! For a nice little radio that does alot, I would go with the Magnum 257 It has am/fm/ssb and man does that thing talk! Just look at my posts in the forum for nets. The price is right an it is a smokin radio

Mobile radios (haven't used enough base rigs to comment)...
It's a hard choice between the Pre-1994 Cobra 148GTL, or the RCI-2970(non-dx model)...
The 148 is easily repaired, modded, and almost bulletproof along with excellent audio and pretty good receive...
The 2970 has excellent audio, plenty of power, excellent receive, very stable ssb, and large bandwidth right out of the box...even more of everything with minor mods...and, after almost ten years of steady use and not a small amount of abuse, it has never had one single problem or issue...
I can't decide between the two...I own both right now and keep switching them out in the pickup

I have owned many many radios in the last fourty five years and have had some great ones. But out of the box the best I have ever had is the one I am useing for a base on a power supply now. It is a Superstar 158 EDX.It is very stable well made and very powerful with an excellent receive.. I have multiple witnesses that have seen this radio modulate over 60+ watts ssb on a bird meter.The one feature I wished it had is a variable power output. I have had radios that modded out well but this one is as good if not better than all of them. (this excludes Kenwood and Yaesu)

i have many radios from tube classics to some solid state classics and new stuff but for a great all around radio to use on base and mobile i love the 2950DX. a nice quiet receive fantastic transmit 35 watts with the right tech with out over stressing the inner components. totaly wide banded with a million freqs and an on board continuos read freq counter. you can add a echo mic for aggravation on am or add a nice heil or D104 for excellent SSB operation. well lit for mobile use with well laid out knobs. use the shift key and move one KC at a time on SSB get up around upper side of 275800 for overseas DXin. makes a great base with a 35 amp power supply. also can be a great working radio with the right mobile or base amp. |

Great radios guys
I own and use the following

MAGNUM 257
PC122XL
GALAXY 959
All have been peaked and tuned, the Magnum 257 goes into the crowd with its great audio and gets what I hear a lot..so the MAGNUM I would say is number 1 in the station.

It's all up to you. See if your friends will let you use their radio's and have a good listen to how they sound. By using as many radio's as you can will give you a feel for how comfortable you are turning the knobs etc. By listening you can hear the difference and pick the audio you want. Don't go off your S meter, use your ears and you will hear the difference. I like all my radios and rotate them when i think of it. Right from my old 23 channel jobs through to my Magnum 357 and IC 725, i try to give them all a run. I have 11+ different radios in my collection at the moment and every one sounds different on the air. As i said, see if you can bum a trial on as many as you can and see which one you like best and suits you best and go from there.
