The early Icom radios had a rather odd audio section in them. I have the 'next generation' rig similiar to yours,..the IC-251A. The 251's stock mic had a built in pre-amp, and an un-amplified mic would not work well at all on it.

These older Icoms take a pretty high gain microphone, but I did have good luck with an Astatic 1104C prior to finding an Icom SM-5 desk mic for it.

According to Icoms mic compatibility list, the SM-2 was the correct/matched desk mic for the IC-211. These older mics pop up from time to time on the internet auction sites.
