Hi everyone...1st post here! I am having problems setting my SWR on my Cobra 148GTL SSB CB radio...here is what I have come up with.
I purchased a brand new Wilson 5000 Mag mount base loaded antenna system to install on the roof of my 2002 Tacoma double cab pickup with the antenna coax running behind the 3rd brake lamp....notched out the plastic cover and sealed with sealed with silicone...cable moves easy even with it all put back together before siliconing in place.
1. SWR after calibrating the radio shack meter is pegging over to the right...almost to the Cal line on the meter. I tried grounding the radio chassis which did not help....moving the ant mast up or down does not change the reading much...best I could do was get it just below the cal line!!!
2. I even cut 1" off the antenna mast and that did no good as well  So I got a 10M ant mast now ;)
3. I got out my VOM and with the antenna unscrewed there are no shorts in the coax to it's self or to the cab of the vehicle. I am getting almost zero ohms on the 200 ohms scale at the antenna center base/coil which I heard is normal?...same readings with coax installed and reading at radio end.
4. I tried a different good radio...Uniden XL SSB with the same pegged readings.
5. disconnected the Wilson antenna coax from my radio shack SWR meter and unscrewed the Wilson 5000 antenna/coil unit and installed my cheapie $10 mag mount antenna to where the Wilson was and I am getting 1.2 SWR on channel 20 without any adjustments! (was setup on a previous older 1993 toyota truck)
Looks like I have a bad coil unit and now I have an antenna mast that will be to short Really unhappy on all of this
Any other suggestions? It's still under the 15 day performance warranty!
