Can anyone tell me the proper way to test say sc2879, or 2290 pills. I keep testing them the same way I test npn or pnp transitors, but something keeps telling me that ain't right.

Thanks in advance.

The problem is many power transistors are not only ONE transistor. Some have several together in that " pill ". The only way I trust testing them is it shows OPEN or SHORTED .... otherwise I would not count on a tester.

first thing to do is get the data sheets on the type of transistor you want to test. figureout if it is a darlington configuration or just a plane standard transistor. if it is just a plain jane on the diode checker setting of the meter the base should read .6-.7 forward biased and extreamly high resistance revers biased.

I test them with an older radio shack transistor tester that has the three leads, black red and green and the female plug built in. This tester has the knob for HFe and the little red LED it works good for matching transistors and giving a go/no/go test. Oh it also has the pnp/npn switch never had it give me a false reading. Some meters have the same setup and will work also. Hope this helps
