my uniden grant xl was working great no problems until i took it out of my truck.i I HAD it sitting inside a few weeks.today i hooked it up my my power supply and it blew the fuse everytime i turned it on 5 times.i have it hooked up the right way to the power supply i even tryed 2 power supplys same thing as soon as the power supply is turned on the fuses blows in hte power cord.its a 5 amp fuse..anyone? |

More information needed. Such as, was antenna connected?? If so does it blow a fuse if the antenna is left off.
In the meantime check the pwer connections for reverse connections and shorts. Also check to see if radio has a diode across the power input and see if it has shorted out..

no antenna was hooked up but i didnt key it up..its very odd i have the pos and neg hook up right to..i shouldt have to have an antenna hooked up to keep it from blowing fuses seeing im not keying it up right?ill hook the antenna on this time and see what it does..thanks for the help.take care |

ok i just hooked the radio up to my base antenna i max 2000 it did the same thing blew the fuse as soon as the power supplys turend on.the fuse is even blowing on the power supply and then i have to push the buttion back in to reset it.i have tyed 3 power cords it blows the fuses on all of them odd. |

ps the fuse in the power cord is 5 amps is that the right amp fuse for this radio?a uniden grant?thanks |

5A should be right. NO I asked about the antenna being connected in case the problem was a short on the antenna system.
Check the diode across the input terminals in the radio and also isolate the finals. Some radios place 12v on the finals as soon as the power line is connected. A Shorted final will cause the fuse to blow.

its really odd the diode is good.I dont have to turn the radio on at all.all i do is plug in the power cord and the fuse will blow. |

i had a radio i accidently hooked up backards
after i acted like your saying.was told thiers a diode in the radio to actually keep the radio
from getting power after its been hooked up backards.good thing mine was only a uniden pro 510

How did you test the diode ?? A quick way of checking would be to desolder one of the legs of the diode and try hooking up again if it still does it check the finals

If the diode in the radio is burnt, you'll see it charred, it's a front-end protection diode located directly at the rear of the radio directly in front of the power cord jack on the component side of the PCB, the side with the speaker mounted in it, aka: the bottom cover. Unsolder the diode and replace it with a 1N4004 or 1N4007, either will, and so will a 1N4002 if need be, make sure the band on the diode is in the correct direction specified by the PCB symbol! You'll see a line with a triangle under the diode, just put the silver band on the diode in the triangles direction and get up!
BTW, a 5 amp fuse is too much, go no more than 3 amp!

Same problem in one of my radios turned out to be a blown cap. |
