I like to try doing some portable CQ/DX in the feild.
I have heard many good things about them and now I like to hear from you here.

a 'famous' local (ham radio book author & contributor to QST & CQ & CQ-VHF) uses homemade dipoles using hamsticks or aluminum tube(for shorter wavelength bands) when he is portable at the docks or on the local 'hill' because he doesn't think the buddipole is a 'worthy expense' at around $350 for the deluxe model. the feeling is that a shortened, wire-wound-over-fiberglas hamstick has a bit less loss then the coils of the buddipole. that said, another friend uses a buddipole while fishing on the barrier beaches off the south shore of LI with his ic706 in his truck. he has great success on 15 & 20 meters, though he says 40(where he prefers to be at home) is a bit of a challenge. he is usually 25+ miles from me & sounds pretty good, and yes, i've heard him speak to most of the same places i do on my 3:1 swr maco! and then some! he bought his used at a hamfest but needed to get a few pieces from the manufacturer. saved roughly $50 after all costs & is happy with it.
