Hello,
What output should I expect to see from a Heathkit SB-220 Tube Amp? It has two 2-500Z tubes in. Average, and peak watts output and drive requirement on AM 11 meter band.

Hey Cornbrown I believe I know you. Just trying to bump your post a little. I have a Heathkit SB-200 that's rated for 1000W and I believe atleast that yours is very similar but with somewhat more output. |

That amp will put out 500 watts with 100 watts of drive AM ...... not to say you can't get more but in class AB most tubes only get about 40% 0f what they run in out ...
Thoes tubes are not cheep ...... so be careful.

I'm sorry I stand corrected as I'm sure Bruce knows what the amplifier is truly capable of doing with input/output. I had read that the Heathkit SB-220 (using a pair of Eimac 3-500Z’s) was capable of producing full legal-limit with 100W of drive, but it didn't distinguish if that was AM or SSB----neither any particular band.

Am I correct in what I've "googled" about my Heathkit? That the Heathkit SB-200 is close to only a 600W amplifer? (with 100W input)
The seller from whom I purchased mine naturally told me it was a 1000W amplifer, and sadly I didn't get the chance to do my homework like I needed to.
From what I've read it would seem that the amplifier will only do half of what he told me it was capable of---but I'm still glad I have it regardless. |

I would loaf it along at about 300 watts on am with frequient breaks in between,that is a nice amp and the difference between 300 and 500 is not worth the chance of killing the amp.

GUYS .....
ALWAYS look at the total plate disipation of the tubes in this case 1,000 watts NOW what you put in and what ever you get out cannot exceed that.
EXAMPLE ..... If you put 1500 watts into the tubes @ 40% (AB1) to stay under the 1,000 watts going up in heat on those tube plates you would have to stay under 600 watts.
BUT class "C" for code the output would be about 80% of input and you could easly ( SAFELY ) get 1,000 watts output ..... and YES in AB1 on SSB since your only at about a 50% usage not 100% like AM 1,000 watts on SSB is safe too AGAIN remember those tubes will set you back at least $300.
These are fine well made amps take care of it and it will last for many years.

Once again Bruce I will say thank you for all the help you provide both to me and the others. It's greatly appreciated and you are a very kind and contributing senior member. I will be carefull of the Heath and will have it gone over at some point before operating it. Yes if you're right about those tube prices I will have a heart attack if something would happen to them (if I am the cause especially) so "we'll be careful". Thanks again for your input-----Fox |

Well I installed 2 new Taylor's 3-500ZG tubes from RF parts in my Heathkit SB220. I also rewired it to run on 240V. I am getting about 1000watts out on AM. I run it at 800 watts.

Can one of you SB-220 or 221 owners tell me what output if any I could expect from driving the Amp with 5 watts AM ?? |
