I Just got an S-9 off of e-bay and suprise! it does key up.The problem is a buzzing sound coming from the speaker radio unkeyed and idleing buzzzzz. When I key the mic everybody else hears it as well buzzzz .I went though all modes and is is always there. Any thoughts on what this could be??
This is my first S-9 so Iam not sure what I should see on the watt meter.I have an autek WM-1 peak reading watt meter. What should I see as dead key with power on low and what should I see with power on high? the top gun modulator seems to have no effect.
Thanks for any help!! and by the way worse case senario can I send it to copper to get this thing fixed??

Could be bad mic cable/wiring or perhaps a bad audio IC or shorted component in audio stage. Does it still 'buzz' with mic unplugged??

My S-9 has an audio hum from the speaker. Much louder than other radios I have. I have it connected to a power supply but I doubt that causes it. I can only hear it with the volume way down and in a quiet room. Once the volume is turned up it is not detectable and nobody has commented on any hum in the transmit. Adjusting the dimmer changes the pitch of the hum. Have you tried hooking it up with different coax, antenna, mic, power source? Any other electronics nearby that can cause an interference problem?

My S-9 purchased/tuned from Copper has never been opened up.
From what I can remember last time I checked the meter...with the rf power knob turned all the way counterclockwise and modulator OFF I get around a 1 watt deadkey and maybe a 20 watt swing, with the modulator ON I get a 1 watt deadkey and a 50 watt swing.
With the rf power knob all the way clockwise I get about a 20 watt deadkey and a 40 watt swing, with the modulator ON I get a 20 watt deadkey and a 50 watt swing. Still with me? I would think all of the newer mosfet version S-9's would have similar results. Depending on which meter I use the numbers vary somewhat...
