the al811 & 811h mod is SIMPLE. you cut 1 wire for the 10-12 meter mod, you will need to adjust input coil (inside amp)for lowest swr. if you do for 26.700 mhz, center of 24.900 & 28.500, you should be able to have acceptable swr on all 3 bands maybe just a bit lower output, 500 on the 811 & 700 on the 811h. unless you use a real ham rig with mating cables, you'll need something to key it. there is a guy in upstate ny that makes a cable to match icoms to amps....can't remember the details....w2eny maybe.... |

The 811 I got is modded already for 10. I guess it just is a matter cutting a green wire like you said Pat. It is only a month old according to the seller and the recipt is there to prove it. Got a great deal so I hope when it gets to me it is a good unit. I hope you see this post pat so I can get info on how to hook up to my IC-7000. I was reading the IC-7000 manual and it sais the amp needs to be a certain voltage or it can mess things up. I dont understand this but will try and figure it out. I want to get a cord made up by this person you said makes them up for radios to hook to amps in the post here Pat. Thanks and any info would be great. AP |

Hey Pat, I dont need the info now as you were correct on the first post of who makes the cords for Icom radios to use with the 811 amp. I did a search and found him selling on the internet with alot of neat stuff. I bought a cord and it should be here in time to hook all up this weekend. I have one question though, can I use my LDG AT-7000 tuner with the amp? I am not sure where it goes in line with every thing. I would think a tuner goes after the radio and amp but it is only rated at 100 watts. The amp puts out up to 600 watts. Do I need to buy a new tuner? Thanks, AP |

Yes you need a bigger tuner.Make sure it is rated at least 1 kw, so you have some head room.MFJ tend to be overrated on the power handling. Rich |

good deal, roger! yeah, i've had good luck with the mfj 941e, 949e & 906 tuners i've used, but with stock radios. i understand their 'legal limit' tuners perform well, though like everything today, there has been know to be a lemon or 2! i've seen the palstar & another (forget which) but they cost BIG BUCKS! you get what you pay....i can only afford mfj, so.... keep us informed on how it all comes together! |

Got everything hooked up, this 811 runs great and does an easy 600-700 watts SSB and about 400-500 watts AM on my cheap meter. I tried using it on the locals around here and some said I went from a 9 to a 20+ and others said from a 3 to a 5-6 but meters dont say a lot to me. Where it made a ton of change to everyone is my audio got very good. Some thing that puzzed me though is when I use the amp my tvi problem goes away and does not affect my tv, go figure. I seen some of the tuners, wow they are expensive. I am looking at an mfj962 and if I can find one used I will grab it. Thanks, Roger |

Hi Roger Glad you got the amp up and running ok. The MFJ962d is a good tuner but for a little bit more money the 989d is better and better built. But also harder to find a used one. Iv seen them go for around $150 . I agree with Pat , A good tuner can be expensive such as ameritron and palstar brands. MFJ is all i could afford price wise and i bought mine used also. In fact i have 3 mfj tuners a 944, 969, 989 the 944 & 969 are 300 watts. I bought the 969 to tune 6 meter band , and my 989 is full legal limit tuner. But becarefull buying a used tuner they get abused also! Have fun Roger and let us know what you find for a tuner? 73 Hal~Moderator136~KCØSVC CEF#0136/CEF HAM#23 ~ CVC#0004

I might add this also: Radio----swr meter----tuner. Most tuners such as a mfj962 has cross needle for forward and refected and swr. You tune to lowest swr on the band you want. I have a van gordan 102' foot dipole at 40'in the air. I can tune down at 10 meter with swr around 2.3 but its better on 40 and 80 meter bands. Also have a 300 ohm tv flat cable connected to 29' dipole around 30' in the trees and do 10, 11, and 6 meter at around 1-8 swr with mfj 969 tuner. Its just fun to play with dipoles. I hope i helped in some way? Hal~Moderator136~KCØSVC CEF#0136/CEF HAM#23 ~ CVC#0004

Thanks, you have helped and believe me I need all the help I can get. I noticed the swr goes down when using the amp, I can have 2.2-2.5 swr and then turn amp on and when transmitting the swr goes down to 1.2-1.5, go figure. My antenna is tuned for upper 11 meter like 38LSB at 1.6 and lower 10 meter 28.300 like 1.5 so I am safe on most of 10 but just the upper 11 meters. The instructions for the amd say it is safe to run up to 3.0 swr so it seems to be a very forgiving amp. Guess it is because it is a tube amp. One thing though, it dont say when I need to tune it except for changing bands. I guess if I tune the amp for 28.400 I can leave it alone for the whole 28.300 to 28.500. Anyway, the amp is great and can not wait till I get some CEF contacts on 10. it is starting to get me upset a little since the band has been open pretty much lately. AP |

Hi again Roger Yes you do have a good amp with 811 tubes, And will take some high swr---- To a point....!!! Doint run it full power at 2-5-1 saves alot of headaches. Baby the amp around 1/2 power and it will last a long time. 100 to 200 watts is plenty of power on am. In fact if you cant do it with 100 watts , Tune the dial and find another station to talk too. Most of the time im with a qso around 35 to 50 watts out. And yes power can help when conditions fade out but if you cant hear them there gone anyway! Im speaking from what i know and trying to help! So your saying if amp is rated 600 watts ssb and lets say 400 am, I should run it around 400-500 ssb and 200-300 am? yea, I can see this will save the amp and make it last. thanks for the advice Moderator136. AP |
