Heres the dilemma. I have a pdl2 antenna. I cant decide if i should build it like the instructions say or ditch all the orbital match and use the 75 ohm coax matching method. Which would yield better results? All opinions and theories are welcomed and encouraged.

If I knew enough to have the confidence that I could modify the PDL2 with the 1/4 wave feeder, then I would just build me a Quad like I wanted from scratch and not mess up the PDL---which may well bring a good price on the market if in perfect shape.

This change in matching may also require a change in wire length as well. This suggest to me that these two different antenna ideas show a very different reactance at the feed point. I don't believe it is just a simple matter of replacing the gammas with 1/4 wave tuned feeders.

You may also have to provided two driven elements with the tuned feeder unless you use the SE idea of voltage feeding the antenna and that might really get complicated.

Sounds a little like to me, you have an issue with using the gamma design and think that the tuned feeder will outperform the Avanti design by some significant amount, so as you could tell with on-air comparisons?

I hear people who use the PDL-2 on air all the time so they are still a bunch out there. I ask how they like em and every one says they love em. I have one setup for 10 meters ready to go up in spring time so I cant wait to try it myself.

My opinion is to keep it, build it, put it up and enjoy it as designed and you will prob like it too.

Good luck

I have extra parts to do it without wrecking anything i could even make a 3 element. but not sure how it would work. If anyone has made a 3 element and would share details it would be appreciated

Twa 77 I had a PDLII for years and the weather got to it after a long long time and they have very good rejection and to make a 3 element out of it I would think it would involve adding another set of elements on the front. And at a shorter length than your driven element.
