I just ordered 4, 5 ft.18 ga. aluminum antenna mast sections from home depo website. I was wondering if this was a good choice. Reason I ask this is it going to be sturdy enough for the Imax 2000 in the wind. Also will it cause anymore tvi or rfi. I do have ground planes on the imax. I am going to have the 20 ft. total mast on a chimney mount that is 13 ft. high. So the Imax base should be at 33 ft. And the top of Imax should be at 57 ft. I am wondering about the bending,because I went to a radio sha website and they have a 16 ga. steel mast and people say they bend in the wind. So 18ga. being thinner might bend easier,but it is aluminum and made by ge. Thx for the responds. |

If you secure the mast with guy wires and being that your only at 20 feet I think you should be ok. Any mast is going to be in trouble if not secured somehow.
If your planning to walk the assembled mast up I would be careful. Better to lean the antenna against the house and build that way.

I agree with Kenny. I would put guy wires at 15ft. If you did it at 10ft, the top 10ft would have a chance to bend anyways. but if you attach it to the house using a mounting bracket and it is as close to the 15ft mark, then guy wires shouldn't be necessary. Hope that helps.

Thx for help. This is what I did. I bought 3 1 1/4" conduit pipes. The first one on the ground I dug a hole,and then poured some concrete. Then the second conduit goes up to a chimney mount. Then the third conduit holds the antenna. I hope it holds strong enough. There are no guy wires. So all in all the antenna base should be at about 28 1/2'. |
