have a little Mitsubishi Galant for a gas saver and want to get the best antenna set up. choises are & there maybe better between a Wilson 1000 Magnet mount on the roof or maybe a top loaded 5' or 7' top loaded skip shooter on the trunk. only thing with the trunk the deck lid is not very big maybe little over 2'wide X 4' wide thats why i thought top loaded. right now i have a Wilson 1000 trunk mounted with braided ground straps going from the lid to the inside bulk head.had a Bad Boy single coil 17" shaft mag mounted on the roof but it did no better then the W-1000 trunk mount does.talk 99.5% SSB and durng the DXing seems to be really directional with that small trunk. would the height of the skip shooter being top loaded do better with a omni directional path or will just i just be stuck with that charistaristic with the small trunk.seems like time & time again it always seems like the Wilson antennas out perform or perform the same as these coil type antennas. |

Personally my #1 choice would be the:
Wilson 1000 Mag Mount, mounted in the center of the roof.

I've owned both a Skipshooter 5ft & Wilson 1000. I really like my Wilson. But I think the SS has better range by a few miles. And than cost less too. I'm planning on getting a 7 footer. A friend of mine runs a 7 ft SS on his trunk and really gets out alot better than my Wilson. We're both running the same radios. |

I've put both on the same spot on a trunk using a field strength meter and talking so someone a couple of miles away the skipshooter did the best job |

Best option would be top drill a hole in the roof and mount the Skipshooter. Of course restricts you in parking places, but a roof mounted, non-magnetic base will be the best antenna you can run.
Now a 9ft whip roof-mounted would be the ultimate

I have owned the Skipshooter (and the Ugly Stick) since about 1978 - and I like all of them.
The 3' and the 4' out perform most all of the same size, and many 6' & 7' of other makes.
The 7' is only barely beat by the 9ft whip (and that is conditional).
Several times I have had 2 (two) 7' on my car - can't be beat for signal & adjustability for SWR. |

The Skipshooter is a great choice on larger vehicles and those with enough ground plane under the antenna to make it efficient.
If you have a really small car, the Wilson will work better. A K40 will sometimes work even better than the Wilson in cases like this. |

I agree with Tech 833 on the K40, I have used several antenna on my two trucks and when I switched to a k40 (only because of ease in removal when using garage) I noticed better performance. I also believe that on vehicles with a larger ground surface a 102 whip or other antenna will work best. |

Yes, if you have a larger vehicle, just about any antenna will work great.
On smaller vehicles, and those with very small surface area, antennas tend to get picky.
The K40 is about the most un-picky antenna I have ever played with. They work well on just about any vehicle, regardless of size.
Remember, just getting a low SWR does not mean the antenna will perform well. Where is that signal going? How sensitive it is on receive? The K40 really shines in cases like this. Just the way it is designed. Sure, it won't take a lot of power, but that wasn't the intent in the first place. |
