Maco Alpha V 5/8 36ft to feedpoint and Diamond X500A side mounted at 20ft on an old american tower in 3ft cube of concrete bracketed at 14ft to side of garage.

I will be adding another section this fall and taking down the Maco to put up my PDL-2 setup for 10 meters.

I have three forty foot towers up. One has an imax, one has a diamond two meter antenna, the other has a Diamond D-130J discone antenna. They are all free standing with two cubic yards of concrete each. All have three copper ground rods sunk and grounded on tower. They have all been up for 10 years plus and haven't budged an inch. The towers are all over 50 feet apart from one another with no guides.

I live on the edge of a small town and my towers all have plain white vertical antennas with the exception of the Diamond scanner antenna. Anyone at the base of my towers with a hacksaw would be found there in a prone position, so I don't worry about that much.

I've got a 50ft tower with 12 ft. of mast sticking out the top. Got a 6 meter 7-element homebrew yagi at the top (29 ft boom), followed by a Cushcraft 4218XL 2-meter long boom yagi (33? ft boom) underneath.

Sandwiched around the 2-meter beam is a 432 MHz H-Frame with 4 homebrew K1FO-modified 19 element yagis and homebrew power dividers. (Anyone get the idea I like weak signal work.)

80, 40, and 20 meter dipoles hang underneath. There used to be a 10 Meter Ringo on top of all that but it broke off in a windstorm 10 years ago. An A99 now resides beside the house on a spaghetti pole.

Go here if you want a look-see: www.qrz.com/n4nb To give some perspective, that's an 85ft roof line under the antenna, and the Ringo is shown in this pic. The top of the Ringo was at 80 ft AGL.

Enjoy. ...I do! :-)

Oh, gotta tell this story, too. About a month after erecting this monster in the backyard, a neighbor from up the road about a 1/4 mile rang my doorbell one evening. She wanted me to sign a petition to prevent a cell phone company from installing a cell tower site on the hill just above her house. I chuckled, took her by the arm (good friends for years) and walked her out into the front yard about 40 feet. I told her to turn around and look up. When she spotted the tower for the first time, she turned several shades of red, got real quiet and walked away. That was the last time we spoke with the exception of polite waves on the road. ultimately, the cell tower got denied a building permit but no one ever channenged my tower.

852 - almost as well as it did at 4-1/2 ft above ground mounted at some angle of vertical as it was then mounted on an satellite dish mount.

As for tvi - well I do run a LP filter, just in case. I have never seen any on my tv's and so far nobody around ahs told me of any.

Actual, the above isnt quite true. I did have one report of tvi 2 days after mounting the antenna and running the coax, but the radios were still packed away in boxes after having moved. Showed the guy the coaxes were not connected to anything and he went away after apologising.

my maco v5/8 is only 18' to the feedpoint, used on 10m & 11m. have 8 tv's hooked to cable in my house. the ones that are ALL rg6 quad including jumpers to accessories get NO tvi. 2 are still on antique rg59 & only gets gets 'bad' tvi, the other depends on freq, time of day, season, etc. power output is always 160 watts or less.

stacked ku4ab loops for 6m at 25' to the midpoint, stacked ku4ab loops for 2m on same mast in between sixes.

par enfed for 40m at about 28', and another for 20m about 24' up.

NEIGHBOR's trees remove antennas from the air during heavy wind, so while not at the best heights, they remain aloft the longest.

based on my record of contacts....i can only imagine the signal reports if ANY of them were higher!

>>I would like to see photos of them it must be nice to have no one to tell you what you can put up or how high .....

Here we are limited to 35 foot ....<<

Wow, Bruce....are you in a HOA area or something? Because the local govt has to comply with minimal needs for hams regarding prb-1, and if you ever use 40, 80, or top band I hardly think that 35 foot would even be anywhere near adequate to run even a g5rv!

IMAX 2000 40' up in a pine tree. Mounted on 40' of antenna pole, strapped to the tree every 4' with double zip tie straps. Solid 6ga ground wire from antenna mount to an 8' ground rod driven all the way in at the base of the pole, with the wire, pole, and rod, clamped together.

working on a new tower and setup BUT, when it is done I will have an all aluminum vertical at 70' to the feed, a homebrew 6m horizontal at 57', an antron 2m at 57' and a DX-CC in inverted V format with center feed at 59'... all the antenna's except the vertical mounted on a home made trolley so I don't have to climb the tower. It should be up within the next couple weeks and I will post pics when it it.

While some are puting up more 55 foot towers ..

Except for the R7 most of mine are comming down and right now I'm down sizing my garage and disposed of most test gear and old radios another 55 gal bag of tubes this last week in the local dump .

My new shop will be much smaller as will be the shack but it will have much newer smaller stuff.

I did keep the HP Nixie tube freq counter the Marconi Signal gen and one of the mitilary Spectum scopes as will as a modulation scope that only needs to be recapped ....

And now the car fits into the garage ....some how I think that what a garage was made for ....

we know height=distance on vhf, but he's losing 40% of his power with the 150+ feet of coax, assuming lmr400, 25% or more if he's using lmr600. unless there's some lower band antennas up there as well, i wonder if the $$/effort of 130' of tower was as cost effective as a slightly bigger antenna a bit lower? i have received 'full quieting' reports on 146.520 simplex well over 55 miles into CT, and 40 miles across land on LI with about 40 watts into stacked loops around 25' to the feed. leftover 9913 & uhf ends..... a fair bit less expensive then a 130' tower.....or any tower for that matter.

I was wondering about the loss Pat, I have only talked to him once and there was a five way QSO going on. For me the cost would be more the first time I had to have local fire and rescue get me down from it when I tried to go to the top. I have Belden coax now and it seems to be doing well, I have 100 feet of coax and the tower is just outside my window. I would like to raise it to 60 feet but don't really want to have to go climb it if repairs are needed. If I need to talk further I will just apply more "power". It isn't the height that bothers me, or even the fall, it is that sudden stop.

It's 35 foot here thats it .... and i have to remove most of mine to make room for the change over to the R7 .... yep 4 antennas are going by-by ....

also the station and shop are undergoing a big downgrade ..... so I will be using far less by the end of the year......

The trade off is my 2 meter FM antenna will have 9 DB of REAL gain for FM in a 180 deg beamwidth. not 3 or 4 like a f22 or v2000 does ....

The HF antennas will cover 80-6 with just 2 antennas ......

THEN with 160 watts on 2 meter we will see how it talks .....

35'....the joys of living in paradise . then again, that's still higher then my highest feedpoint on any band!
160w on SSB too, or just FM? we've made it on 6m, 10m, & 11m & k2ovs isn't that far from me, just bigger antenna on 2.....you never know.

852 - sorry to take so long to answer your question. - Heck no, 36ft would be better, but I am working within the constraints allowed by the landlord - no holes and nothing attached to the house.

I am working on him letting me use a chimney mount, on our fireplace chimney, with a 15-20ft pole and then installing a home made multi-band Moxon antenna just above the chimney, an 11 element 2m beam above that and then maybe the A-99 on top. Time will tell

Over the years I have read that when increased antenna height it should be done at 36 feet spaceing. So the next should be 72 feet. On a different posting ( if I understood it correctly) I thought it said that after 36 feet to raise it in half wave (18 feet) increments. That would make it at 54 feet is this correct? I always did it in full wave increments

Yes, that is correct and it would put your antenna at 1-1/2 wave from the ground.

On an Omni I figure to the bottom of the load / antenna and on Beam's I try and get the boom at the 36', 54', 72', or 90'.

Hope this help's,

Yes and no.

By having the feedpoint of an end-fed vertical 1/2 wavelength (or a 1/2 multiple) above ground, it gives a lower takeoff angle. That is over 'perfect ground', and is just a guideline.

The most important thing is to get the antenna as high as possible. Part 95 says that a CB antenna can be no more than 60 feet above ground (to the tip) or 20 feet above a structure, like a building, whichever is higher. However, it is a rarely enforced rule, and is one you can easily receive a waiver to, if you choose to go that route.

It is amazing how much better a CB antenna works at 80 feet above ground than 40 feet above ground.

Thanks 833, I have a tree I plan on useing that is 60 feet tall. With help from a freind and a 20 foot pipe I think that will still be legal on height since the tree is a natural structure. Have a good day friend and once again thanks.

modified supper scanner at 35ft .. mods. are - replaced the rg8 coax with lmr-400 , shortened the elements a tad and insulated the lower part of the elements and used hairpin matching with the neutral points of the hairpin grounded (for DC grounding) and 1:1 baluns on all 3 elements . i bypassed the "beam" switching in favor of being omni only ! (less loss without the relays in line)
