I have a spike coming from my brake light switch, I hear it my radio when I let off the brake. What would be the best way to fix it? I have not taken the coaxial off to check if it is from the coaxial or the power wires yet. It drives me insane... |

What kind of radio you using, they make many power cords with filters to take out that kinda noise. also be sure you have a good antenna and radio ground. George/Starface/KI4NBE CEF 476 CVC 014 HAM 181 SOUTHEAST CEF NET CONTROL

It is the magnum 257 blue face. I have a trunk mount Wilson 5000 that is grounded to the trunk lid with two ground straps from the lid to the body. My radio is not grounded other than the regular ground to the shock tower and the power to the battery. the wire size for the power and ground are AWG-8. There is very little static on Rx the SWR is 1.1 and there is no noise from anything except the brake light switch. It only does it on the 257 and not my other radios. |

take a capacitor of at least 1uF and connect from the hot side of the the brake switch to ground. For added safety include a 1MOhm resistor in series too. switch ----||---^^^^^^-----ground Simon Tech237 N7AUS . I thought he said, "there was no rust for the wicked, and I own an MGB"

OK I will try it and see what happens. Should I ground the back of the radio to the car body also? Thanks... |

Yes, ground EVERYTHING! to a SINGLE POINT GROUND to the car frame. ie: Amp / Pre-amp (if used), Antennna, Antenna Coax, External Speaker (if used), Radio frame/case and any meter's if used. Hope this help's, Lon~Tech808 N9CEF CEF#808~CVC#002 Radio Enthusiast!

I grounded everything and added the cap and resistor and I have no spikes and virtually no noise! I talked to a guy in south eastern Mississippi on AM from northern Oklahoma at night with no skip on the little Magnum 257 and the Wilson 5000 trunk mount and he said it is loud and clear! Oh I am not using the Wilson mount I am using a stainless mount with RG58x mini cable and a Wilson 5000 load and whip off a magnet mount and the SWR is flat 1.1 or better. Thanks I appreciate the help. |
