Personally I believe the stock mic works the best. I use my 257 for a base application and my "radio shack" is used only for radios. No tv, no outside noise to be picked up. I have just recently turned the radio modulation up to 90% and my regular QSOers still don't believe it is the same radio. It has very loud modulation now, compared to the constant "you are clear, but not very loud". Now all I get is "you have no worries, you are plenty loud". Wish I had done it years ago. |

i've heard a hundred different mics on the omega, delta & 257-magnum's cpu controlled radios with powered/amplified factory mic-and while many sounded good, the factory mic sounds best! even a w2ihy and other EQ accessories only made modest improvements. |

I believe the stock mic sounds the best. I turned mine up and had to turn it back down a little because it was too loud. I put a D-104e on it and it sounded OK but still the stock mic sounds better. |

my stock mic out did my d-104.
I think most 257 owners are looking for a better looking mic that also does a great job.
bigger isn't better in this case.

Starface is right the stock mic is the best for the 257 and the smaller size is actually better. I have the newer one without the channel buttons although it is not as small as the older version it is still much smaller than a d-104e or a 636 and easier to handle. The mics are very sensitive and produce quality audio as well as limiting cab noise. |

Hey guys,,,, i found out the same thing with my magnum s-9,,,,the stock mic sounded best,,,hands dowm....i tryed everything from a 575,silver eagle,golden eagle,turner,& numerous noise cancelling mic's just to see what the audio reports were from locals,,i was told the astatic 636 sounded way to tinny on the magnum,,,surprisingly,,, since that mic usually matches great with any of my other rigs..... magnum wants you to use that stock mic,,,which is really a power mic,,,being amplified..... I was thinking for those of you that dont like the cheap feel & design of the stock mic,,,, depending if you have big or small hands,,,some may prefer the feel of a 636 in your hands,,,me included,,,,, a thought would be to get the shell/case of a 636 & swap the mic element & components from a magnum stock mic into the 636 or say rk 56 or whatever mic you feel is most comfortable in your hands... Pat,,,,do u think that can be done with no issues ? good idea ?? anyone else have any thoughts on this ? |
