bypassing the fuse that blew when radio hooked up backwards is usually what blows the diode....is the power cord plugged in/hooked up properly? have seen the CURRENT french uniden president jackson....the power cord & radio markings were REVERSED on a few of the original batch.....red was -, black was +. not good for the fuse.

This sounds like a shorted driver or final. I'm no tech but I have had a few that done the same thing although I have had units with shorted diodes also. Sounds like a short. I would check the diodes where the power comes in, then the final and driver.

thanks, the problem was a damaged insulator causing the final to short out.
