I have a texas star 500v and on am after I un key, it does not un key for 3 seconds. On ssb with the delay on it takes 4 to 5 seconds to un key. Can any of the techs help with the problem? ( The amp is new and i got it from a friend ) |

Sounds like relay is sticking

Changed the keying transistor, the cap for the ssb delay and still have the same problem. the swr is good the power is swinging to 500 watts. I am driving it with a 2 watt dead key, swinging to 20 watts. If I increase watts to 6 on the dead key, still have the same problem. If I do a quick key up on am,the relay does not hold after I let off the key,but if I hold it on the key for more than a couple of seconds,the amp will hold for 2 to 3 seconds and the delay is not even turned on. No matter how you key on ssb it will hold for about 4 seconds. My friend said when he had it hooked up to a mobile radio with the built in amp,he forgot the amp was still on a few times and(drove it with a swing of 80 or more watts). there is no smell of or visible sign of the amp being hot. Does any one know what else could be the problem? could it be a weak 2879 transistor? |

How big is your Power Supply?
Just a coupule of Suggestion's,
#1 ~ I suggest you have / use at LEAST a 45 / 50 Amp Power Supply to drive it to acheive maximum output.
#2 ~ Is your YELLOW DELAY button on?
#3 ~ Raise your Input power from radio to amp to 15 - 20 watts for maximum power output.
Remember:
Under Driving/Powering an amp is just as bad/harmfull as Over Driving/Powering it.
If all else fail's I would suggest that you contact:

Thanks for the quick help. I have a 120 amp variable voltage (13.8 to 16 volt dc power supply). I am using a 2950 dx moble (2 watt dead key swinging to 20 watts) for this box. The delay button is off when it is on am. I only turn the delay on for ssb. On ssb the delay time is still 4 seconds. I am expecting a 2995dx from Copper on Monday. I will take all of the advice you gave and can give and see what it does. How much drive can thi box take on a dead key- to the max swing wattage ,without any harm to the box? And if after I try the increase in drive and the problem is still there what then could be the next fix? Possible relay or the 2879 replacement? Just a thought. Thanks so much for your time and help. As always I value your advice and your education in your field. |

mr. 808, The drive increase on the 500v was the problem for the delay of the key. However I still need to know just how much is a safe dead key and a safe limit on the swing. Once again many thanks for your help and info. |

for swing/pep these will easily handle 50 watts
maybe even more.im not sure on dead key though my guess would be 4-5 watts max

Hi Dale, To help with the problem I had, I sent a 10 watt dead key with a swing of 100 wattsinto the 500v. It handeled it fine, with no problem with any over modulation. It did get a little warmer but I installed a fan on the bottom so as to keep it cool and make the 2879 last longer. My friends are running theirs with a little more swing than i would. The driver on a 667v if I remember right it is a 2290, that can put out 80 watts swing on the drive into the 667v.The 500v and the 667v are the same except 667v has a built in driver and the 500v does not. I plan on using a 2995dx to drive the 500v. |

yea i knew the 500 will handle alot of swing
didnt think it would handle a 10 watt carrier though. sounds like a nice setup with the 2995dx

TSDx500(2879x4)...2watts deadkey and 50watts MAX swing...anymore and you are abusing the little guy.
